TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

I wanted to start on a weight loss program because I had gained more than a few pounds in the past few months and after looking at all the options we decided (Andreina and I) to join Jenny Craig. We went to our first meeting last Thursday and found out that my doctor had to sign off on paperwork for me to join because of the insulin I was taking or something to do with my diabetes (??).

Today I got a call from the person we met with last week saying that their medical review board (or something like that) had decided I couldn't be accepted. She wasn't really clear about the reasons, but I was wondering if this is a unique case or they simply don't accept people with diabetes?

Now that blows!! Have you looked into NutriSystems? I know they have a plan for T2. I guess Jenny Craig is synonymous with beeatch!! I don't see the problem if your Doctor signs off on the idea. Good luck!

Are they just wanting Type 2, pill and oral controlled?

The Jenny Craig medical FAQ page discussed Type II diabetes (http://www.jennycraig.com/corporate/medical/faqs/) but not Type I. The JC Diabetes Fact sheet says they might do exactly what they did to you (http://www.jennycraig.com/assets/documents/corporate/DiabetesFactSh...)

In my opinion, based on recent video evidence, you don't need Jenny Craig. You need Dino to come up there and whip your butt into shape with some hard core b-ball for a week or two.

And lay off the cookies.

I should have looked at that before going to the meeting. Still, it's disconcerting that they'd turned anyone down based on the limited information they gathered from me:
-They had no clue what my most recent A1C was.
-They knew nothing about my diabetes management.

I do agree that I should (and will) do more of what appeared in the video:

Manny,

I was also denied by JC and had a fight with the lady too. They have a diabetes plan there too so its really false advertising. I was approved by my doctor, he told them that I would be able to handle myself but, they didn't care I still got denied. I don' understand if your doctor ok's it why they would deny it. Unless their nutritional facts are not correct and our bolus will be wrong for what we ate.

Anyway, I was determined so I went to another JC and signed up under my married name, didn't put that I had diabetes and got approved. lol I am so sneaky.

Who are they to tell me I can't join a weight loss program? I didn't feel like pursuing it further or else I would have fought it harder. I felt like I won in the end! It did help me get my a1c down from 8.2 to 7.3 though.

Yes, I had the same worry that their nutritional facts were not correct... I really hope there is nothing like that, that will be really bad.

If the nutritional information is incorrect then what would the use of their program. I imagine most people join Jenny Craig because they want to know they are eating X amount of Y etc. I'm not saying their info is incorrect.

Based on this one sentence from the Jenny Craig information regarding diabetes I think the main issue is one of liability.

"Our Jenny Craig Consultants are not medical professionals and are not qualified to provide such education or advice related to diabetes management."

Khurt,

Regarding your quote: "Our Jenny Craig Consultants are not medical professionals and are not qualified to provide such education or advice related to diabetes management."

They ask you to have your medical professional know that you joined the program so, if you are supervision of your medical team and they approve that you can be on the program why would they still deny you? I understand the liability thing but, I think as long as you are in contact with your diabetes team through the whole diet and maybe JC has you sign something covering any liability issues that you should not be denied. Why do they ask you to contact your doctor in the first place. I really think in the end, it is discrimination.

Ugh, should I fight this? LOL
