hi. anyone get diagnosed with type 1 later in life? i got it at 32 yrs old. it hit me fast.within a few months i lost about 20lbs...lost most of my eye sight...couldnt remember anything. so exhausted....thirst beyond belief.....it was a huge adjustment b/c i lived 32 yrs without it. i felt like i litterally started my life over. it was so overwhelming. id love to hear from ppl tht got it even in their early 20s. ive only had it 5 yrs so it took me til now to finally get things under somewhat of control. i am very outgoing n always felt very insync with others...now having diabetes i find a part of me feels very "alone" even though im not. even when i explain what im going threw at times..i know tht ppl dont really get what im goin threw. wld love to hear from ppl in the same boat as me. :))

Thanks so much, Natalie.

I was not diagnosed until the age of 43, so you are not alone! I've only had it for three years, and it's taken quite a bit of adjusting.

Hi Jessica!

I was diagnosed this April, just a few weeks before my 31st birthday - total shock!

I can relate to the feelings you're having - it can be tough to change so much about your life, especially when there are so many things you've gotten used to: favorite foods, restaurants, etc.

These boards have been a huge support for me, even if I'm just reading some of the threads and not necessarily posting. Ive also found that being up front about my Diabetes has been very liberating. I decided early on that I would own it as best I can and be open with friends, family, and my clients - I've been lucky in that the few minutes of discussing it openly with people the first time have saved me much more stress down the line. Now I can say "I don't eat this or that" or I can test/bolus without much fanfare. There are obviously plenty of questions from people, but, again, the more openly I discuss it the easier it is. Even if the person doesn't understand fully, I feel better for talking about it.

I guess I'm also lucky in that most people who ask me lots of questions do so because they want to understand it better and that most people want to support me however they can. I know that's not always the case with the people around us, but I figure that the more up front I am, the less others think of it has a big deal.

Conversely, when I've got a head full of questions it's very comforting to know I can come to these boards, ask a very specific question and get several replies from others in a matter of minutes saying "oh yeah, I know what that's like" or "I've gone through that - here's how I dealt with it."

Hope that helps a little - all the best to you!
