I'm trying to lose some pounds and inches. I exercise intensely. My program includes,cardio,core and weigth training.I have heard that insulin can make you gain weight. Last night I attended a wellness seminar and the Physician conducting it shocked me when he said,:" Insulin causes inflamation throughout the body". This Physician treats patients with conventional medications and also holistic Rx. Please share your comments.Pete

I really enjoyed reading these comments and learned a few things. My research confirms that insulin is known to cause weight gain, the drs and endos know this, but sometimes they don't tell you. It's not a grey area, it's a fact. And, you can diet and exercise more, and still gain weight. I found the recent "algorythmn(?) for type 2 treatment" most interesting - it's tough for lay people like me to read, as it's intended for GPs and endos. You can download it from a medical website as a pdf file. It's the new bible for treatment of type 2s, and in there, they note the known side effects etc of the drugs and types of insulin. For example, levemir is known to cause relatively less weight gain, whereas some are worse.

For a 55 yr old type 2 that is 100 lbs overweight, the diet and exercise thing, over and above sugar control, is a struggle. You exercise too hard, you hurt yourself, then you have to back off and allow the injury to heal, and so it goes. Old knees, a bit or arthritis, tennis elbow, numb feet. I've found the treadmill and recumbent bike to be good exercise that is sustainable and scalable, but on humid days, the hips really feel the pounding. Exercise clubs really don't know what to do with older, fat diabetics, though they market that they do. Certainly, lots of young and old people exercise and diet with a wide variety of ailments and limitations, but it's kind of nice to share diabetic experiences in these group discussions. Cheers!
Grant,thank you for your reply. I'm glad that you cofirmed the insulin weight connection.I do work out hard and enjoy it very much.I enjoy the physicial and social aspects of the gym. I meet new people of all ages and have a chance to chat between exercises. I think I'd be lost if I didn't go the gym. Thank you again for sharing your research findings. A thought Peter , this late at night : do you eat breakfast regularly ??...lots of people try to avoid the most important meal of the day and metabolism slows down which promotes weight gain . Ultimately may mean over eating at other times . My largest meal of a typical day is breakfast .

Peter I am one of those people that pretty much "has to have" a snack at night. I don't know how you are with carbs but depending on what I have had for dinner I usually have 1 of 3 things as a snack. Jello has out prepackaged cups of sugar free chocolate mousse for 60 cals and 10 carbs each. They come in 3 flavors and I love the milk chocolate ones. If I have been really good about carbs at dinner I will occassionally make up some of pillsbury's brownie minis. These are great for me because you can make up just 6 at a time and since a serving size is 2 and there are 3 people in my house that means none left over to keep snacking on! The last thing I have found is from Central Market (so I am not sure if you can find them in your locale) is Magic Pop Rice Cakes. I normally do not like rice cakes but these ones are awesome. They are 15 cals and 5 carbs each, about 5-6 inches wide and I top them with either spray butter and sweetner with cinnamon or cocoa powder. We have tried them with salsa as an alternative to chips and they work great. As you can tell when I am feeling peckish at night I really don't want a healthy salad or something.

Now I am the opposite. I have to watch what I eat for breakfast or I will go high. I can handle some carbs as long as I have balanced it out with protein. I usually have egg whites, veggies, fat free cheddar cheese or low fat feta cheese, and some canadian bacon or turkey sausage. Though I have found that I can handle toasted sandwich thins with peanut butter as well. My largest meal is usually dinner.
I have lost 35 pounds by portion control,walking, and taking my medicine (metformin).

I have been able to srop 23 lbs since Sept 1 by paying attention to calories in vs calories out, watching what I am eating and increasing activity levels (I use the BodyBugg).

Has anyone had a blood pressure spike like say 120/151
Hi Joe Ive had very high blood pressures in the past when I wasnt taking medication like 188 over 145 stuff like that. Seemed to scare the bejesus out of the health care folks taking it, nurses and doctors alike.
