What Are Some (Diabetes) Things You Know You Shouldn't Do But Do Anyways?

Hello All here is my Top 10 List of Things Below:

1. Over Eating to Correct a Low

2. Leaving the Infusion Set in "Just one More Day"

3. Leaving the Lancet in your Finger Poker for Waaayyyy toooo Long.

4. Re-Using Syringes, to the point where it really does hurt

5. Eating when High - y'all know it's best to wait

6. Chasing Numbers - AKA treating a food reading with another bolus of insulin

7. Making spontaneous basal changes - Like I'm low, I'll just shut it off for a bit.

8. Ignoring alarms - both mechanical and internal, pump, CGM, and our own lows.

9. Eye Balling Gargantuan Amounts of Carbs, even though we know how to use the scale.

10. My favorite, licking the blood drop off the finger post prick! Makes me feel really rebellious.

What are some of your "Things You've Been Advised Not to Do"

Either way I am totally guilty of that one...If my food is not packaged then I use a combination of eye scanning and SWAG-ing...lol
I've been D for over 52 years and never heard #12, I drink a glass of wine most every night and beer maybe once a week. And occasionally a shot of whiskey. (In college it went much further.)

What's supposed to be the issue with adult beverages? Not that I care what the medical community thinks, I'm just an inquiring mind.
There's a significant amount of carbs in beer.
I like to drink a shot of scotch on the rocks most days with dinner. Big freakin' deal. It lowers my blood sugar, slowly and sweetly. Sometimes I have even have two, taking the other later in the evening. No harm done that I can see. Have never had a low because of it (wine on the other hand brings me down waaay to fast). And my A1C and blood sugar are very well under control, no other D related problems either.
well if you are gonna have one might as well have 2 and if you are gonna have 2 .....

If you want something even better get a good 25 year scotch and lose the rocks its sippin on awesome - goes well with a cigar!

Surprised at the comment on the Wine thats my drink of choice in the evening - always dry red and they claim its good for the heart!!
I think the ice with scotch keeps it from getting too intense, on the other hand wine is not usually drunk with ice.

I went to a single malt scotch tasting recently and drank everything neat. And VERY slowly. I was fine after it was all over.

Me too. Type 1 for 57 years. Done all of the above and then some.! Including excessive alcohol. Remember for decades we didn't know any better, were never informed of any better, never educated and had no tools to help us.

The sugar and carbs that are in some drinks...Also drinking helps your body produce insulin so you have to make sure you eat enough when drinking...A couple of weeks ago I was at a party taking shots and dancing and I went low 4 times....No medical person ever told me I couldnt drink but just watch out for the highs from some drinks and lows from others...
No, alcohol does NOT help your body produce insulin. Not for Type 1's OR 2's. What it does is impair your liver's ability to produce glucose, because the liver preferentially processes alcohol before gluconeogenesis.

In the normal state, when you're not eating, and have digested all your previous meal, the liver is constantly producing small amounts of glucose -- enough to keep your BGs level, as long as there is enough insulin on board. When alcohol prevents that, all of a sudden, the insulin you have in your bloodstream has no extra glucose to work on, so it just continues to lower what was a normal BG and you go low.

The worst part of that is that you may smell like booze, and people may think you are just drunk when you are actually low. The symptoms can be the same, and diabetics have died in the drunk tank when police didn't know or think to have them checked for low BG.

So the answer is to ALWAYS have something to eat when you drink. Even drinks with CALORIES may not have much in the way of carbs, because the calories may be coming from alcohol, which has 7g per oz. (?) The Japanese have the lovely custom of always serving snacks with drinks -- we should do the same!
A doctor told me to watch out for drinking because of lows. Then I looked it up online and it said something about alcohol helping your pancreas produce insulin...I guess it doesnt really matter as long as you know to eat when drinking, lol...As for higher calories I am not sure about that. I do know if I drink a fruity drink or one that has more sugar then it will increase my BG out of control. So I do not eating anything when drinking those and I never go low....

Basically you have to find what works for your body....
The way it was explained by my CDE was that if you go low, it can be dangerous because your liver is too busy dealing with the alcohol to release extra glucagon.

Therefore, not especially recommended you drink or if you do, to have with food.

I have never been a big drinker anyway so it's not a hardship to go without. I have maybe one drink at a time every few months. We're planning on having a BBQ this weekend and I may partake of a naked grape cooler that's been sitting in my fridge for months.

Next trip to Vegas though, I will have to experiment with having a liquor slurpee- I love those frozen margarita machines- but it will be a very small one, not the giant yard long ones!
I was diagnosed in college, in the middle of my drinking years, lol...basically alcohol itself will produce a low but when it is mixed with something sugar like then you will go high...Wines are also on that may go high list....

I am not a CDE but I am a diabetic who drinks and I would fully recommend that you test your BG when you drink anything to see how YOUR body reacts....Also you can look up drink contents online because I am sure that a frozen margarita will NOT make your sugar get low, its mixed with fruit juices....

Usually bar drinks are more fillers than straight alcohol, so you may have a big margarita drink with like one shot of alcohol and the rest is just flavored sugar water. The sugar taking the alcohol to your bloodstream quicker is what makes you feel like the drink is strong. Trust me there is not that much alcohol in it....I also had bartendar friends...lol
