It usually takes three shots of NPH daily to cover a 24 hour period. If you are taking a fast acting insulin, you can give yourself a shot during the night every four hours or so, just enough to cover what your approx. basal needs are for that four hours.

Sorry didn't see you were getting samples. You might try the calling the office anyway and having them page the doctor on call. They might make an exception and arrange to meet you there at a certain time, OR call in a prescription. I personally would try that first and use NPH as a last resort.
Permalink Reply by NyJonesy26/Ken on November 25, 2011 at 7:11am Well I usually take 17 units lantus at night not sure how much Novolog I'm gonna need to cover that every four hours
Permalink Reply by erinmcmahon on November 25, 2011 at 7:18am I live in Hudson Falls and I have a Lantus pen (for backup) that has about 250 units in it. Do you want it?
Permalink Reply by NyJonesy26/Ken on November 25, 2011 at 7:21am Oh my God that would be incredibly helpful is there a way you could drop if off at my house?
Permalink Reply by Brian (bsc) on November 25, 2011 at 7:25am I think it is very generous of erinmcmahon to offer a nearly full Lantus pen. That isworth about $100. I don't think she should have to deliver the pen to you. Get off your b*tt and go get.

Permalink Reply by erinmcmahon on November 25, 2011 at 8:47am @bsc, thanks for looking out for me, but in the end it was complete non-issue. I had no idea, but NyJones26/Ken is my next door neighbor! What a crazy coincidence, and it worked out perfectly. :)
Permalink Reply by Brian (bsc) on November 25, 2011 at 11:52am I am glad it worked out. Understand, I have high expectations and I am blunt. I'm sure Ken is a good person. I regularly help (certain) people who are in severe co-dependent relationships and your comment just set me off.
Sometimes when we say something and it comes out different than we intend. I did not mean to make you feel like a bad person.
Permalink Reply by erinmcmahon on November 25, 2011 at 7:26am Sure. Can you send me your address?
Permalink Reply by Cinderfella on November 25, 2011 at 8:45am You probably have that donation of insulin in hand already, but my suggestion for the future would be to go to the nearest ER and have a doctor write you a prescription of whatever it is that you need. I have done this before. One time while travelling, I lost the pouch that I had all my supplies in (and did not have a back up supply packed in another bag). I went to the nearest ER, they gave me a prescriptions and I had what I needed in one hour.
