TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Once in a while I get depressed by the prospect of poking myself with needles for the rest of my life and minding everything I eat. The depression gets worse with festivals and celebrations at the end of the year. I am just wondering how other diabetics handle their depression. Would appreciate your input. Thanks.

Day by day, thats how i try to handle it. Every day is a different challenge and some are easier than others, but it's a full time issue for me. It helps if you have support. Good luck

If we think of other aspects of festivals, family gathering, looking good and healthy in party dresses, exchanging nice gifts, music, flowers, dinners that are variables, more vegetables,fruits....then with this positive cheerful way of looking forward to seasonal festivals, all will be great.

Depression can strike anyone. I guess the risk increases for people like us with diabetes. Can be associated with the stress of managing it and/or anxiety of developing complications. Personally I explore different ways of "feeling better":

- Increase exposure to sunlight and fresh air (some psychologist calls it "phototherapy') Sometimes darkness dampens my mood.
- Change environment, ambience, open/wider space. Closed, cramped rooms can be very restricting to movements. Open and wider places usually gives me more 'freedom' in movement. Breathing becomes easier.
- Talk to somebody....friend, family, neighbor, teacher, counselor.
- Exercise, any physical activity like I walk the dogs, dance or work out, window shopping, watch a movie
- Start a new project/activity - something that I like doing...like gardening, rearranging my home furnitures, LOL
- Joining groups, volunteering in community works, church, neighborhood activities

Hope these helps a bit =)

I try to think of people worse off than me. For example one day I was depressed and flipping through the channels when all of a sudden I see this woman on t.v. with no arms or legs talking about how shes overcome her disability. AMAZING!!!! I also think about other diseases. Like cancer. All the chemo they have to go through. My basic thoughts are it can be bad but it definitely could be worse. God bless.

It helps me to get out and get my mind off of myself. It's really hard knowing that for the rest of your life you have to pay that close attention to what you eat. It makes me mad sometimes. I just try to let it go when it happens cause if I think about it too much it really brings me down. One day at a time...that's all I can look at.
