You must be active, young and have a high metabolism!! Enjoy it while it lasts, LOL!! :-)
A1c of 5.9, eating a 'what I want' diet. It is possible ;)
I KNOW you're young, Kari!! All 25 years of you! :-) It's just us old folks with the slowed down metabolisms who have to watch what we eat and how much we weigh!
Natalie, it depends how you define 'traditional Japanese'. You can still have the miso soup, all the tofu products, sashimi, most of the 'main course' dishes without the rice. I do miss sushi but reminded myself - if I had to choose between not being able to eat the raw fish or the rice, better to have to make do without the rice, right? Post-dx I also realized that grated daikon is sooooo delicious and now load up on it with sashimi. Somehow the whiteness and Japaneseness of it goes some way in making up for the absence of the rice.
Yeah, but somehow it just doesn't taste the same without rice. And then there are all the noodle dishes, including soba, udon, ramen (actually Chinese), shirataki, etc. And Japanese style curry rice. And yakitori, which is basted in a sugar/ginger/soy sauce mix -- I could go on and on.

So I only eat Asian on a limited basis (Asian food is my favorite), and get by on trying to eat more vegetables and salad. The only Japanese restaurants in Reno are sushi places, and you can't get the other stuff anyway. But I do eat Chinese things like broccoli beef and Thai curry, and Indian things without the rice. Best I can do! :-)
I agree it doesn't taste the same without rice but I have to obey my meter. You know how it is! I'm actually really glad I no longer live in Asia where all the food is so delicious but soooo carby. Living in a provincial English town suddenly has a plus point to it!

Oh, I forgot shabu-shabu. That's quite easy on BG as well. There is an awesome all-you-can-eat Chinese hotpot place here where almost every item is meat/veg. And my local butcher has started selling Wagyu/Kobe-style beef as well, which is so exciting!
Yeah! Shabu-shabu -- I forgot that too! Oh, you're bringing back memories!! :-)
i dont get it, what should i be eating? tofu, span, and a ritz cracker ?
Just the tofu and the spam, hold the cracker lol
For me, hold the spam, please. ::::shudder:::::
I had to change my e-mail account because of drowning in spam. Gives a whole new viewpoint on the original! Which Hawaiians just LOVE -- they even make Spam Sushi!
Aside from eliminating problematic foods most of the time, a normal, healthy diet. Bread, rice, potatoes and pasta are healthy foods (or can be). And even some unhealthy foods do not cause high spikes, while healthier ones can. Pay attention to the glycemic index of food, mixture of fast and slow carbs to match the insulin better. You can prebolus, superbolus or overbolus and fix at the two hour mark. You can eat everything in moderation. Not everybody is going to want to eat low carb and there are other options. And you do not have to hold that ritz cracker :), just don't eat a sleeve of them in one sitting. Add cheese or peanut butter to the Ritz cracker to slow down or eliminate the spike.
