What should I be looking for in a food scale? Does anyone use one?

Does anyone use a food scale? I want one that can estimate or calculate the grams of carbs in a food, is there such a thing? What should I be looking for in a scale?

I feel extremely bitter when I think of how much my supplies cost, they are making enough money of of us, so really I don't think they want to find a cure! Test strips $90.00 and they expect us to check at least 4x a day!!
since i started using a pump in may, i have been a little OCD on the testing. LOL! sometimes as many as 12x a day! i don't have any benefits at work so i am paying 100% out of pocket, and theres more than just insulin and test strips. theres the other meds that i am taking for high BP and high cholesterol as well as my thyroid meds. i am a walking pharmacy!!
I use a Salter digital that give the carb count, and much more. If I ever had to replace it I'd probably buy the one posted , the 1450. I'd check out all the features first. One thing I want in my next scale is portablility and to be able to just type in the food name, instead of looking up codes for everything.
Hi Sweetblooded. I use a Starfrit Scale which i paid $29 for. The regular price was $44. I bought it at Home Hardware, here in Ontario, and it does everything. I was going to buy one of the Salter Scales, until i saw this. It counts carbs, fats, protien, calories, sodium and fibre. It measures weights in grams and ounces. I love it! you can add your plate to the scale before you turn it on and it takes that into consideration before weighing any food. It is easy to figure out, and it comes with a handy book that lists tons of foods. You just enter the #code of the food to be weighed and there you go. I use it every day and it is not to big that I can't take it with me if we are going to family or friends for dinner. I have seen them at Zellers and Canadian Tire also.
Hope this helps! 8)
I had no idea this one counted carbs! I was looking at it the other day at Zellers, but it didn't say on the box if it counted carbs too! I also saw it on sale at Canadian Tire for $8.00!! This is AWESOME! I am going to the can tire website for more info on this product, I know they have customer reviews on their products! OH you just made my day :)
Sorry I was wrong, I was thinking of the smaller scale that is $29.99 and usually goes on sale for $8.00. I checked out the scale you mentioned that is $44.99 that you got on sale $29. I appreciate everyone's recommendations, but I have made my decision and am going to get the Starfrit 5kg scale from Canadian Tire, great reviews on this scale, and great price! Again thank you!
you will love it, i'm sure!! the only difference between it and the more expensive Salter scale is the food data base. but the book is pretty good and you can also add your own foods to it, i believe!....and since we are going to the poor house, we may as well save money where we can right?? LOL!!
Well maybe there is a bright side, I might not need the scale if I can't afford the food to measure! LOL
I have the Salter Nutri-Weigh 1450 scale and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
It is so easy to use and its food database is huge!! You can also program your own food (recipes) into it.
I bought mine on eBay. I think it was around $60 - $80 including shipping.
I recommend it to all the other diabetics that I know. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of diabetes management, which is always a good thing!
