Grateful for having received today from my GP the go ahead to keep my drivers license for another 5 years without needing a Drivers Medical Test .Eyes OK , walked in a straight line , BP 110/70 , able to move head to left/right side , no hypoglycemia unawareness concerns etc.etc. And BC Government's Medical Services Plan paid for it :)
Completed form was faxed to Victoria , BC
Wow Nel! That's awesome! If I move to BC will the Medical Services Plan make me have all those great readings and results? Ontario Medical Insurance has pretty much made me old 'n grey!
Also, when you hit 80 in this province they make you re-test for your driver's license every other year, and now they're even talking about raising insurance rates for old farts... like all those war vets are getting drunk on Saturday night and crashing into people. If the aging population did anything to make driving unsafe for anyone else, it would be driving too slowly! And we all have to watch our health before driving of course, not just the seniors.
:) .... Hubby , 82 ,required a renewal ( 5 year ) drivers license before his birthday ...he had a Drivers Medical Exam prior to renewal(drivers license good for another 5 years ) and had to pay $ 50.00 ...I think the difference is the classification ...my license renewal does not take place till July 2013...why I had to have this done is due to diabetes . If his GP had recorded any " malfunction ", the next step would be : http://www.drivesafe.com/2010%20BC%20Guide%20in%20Determining%20Fit...
Speaking of driver's licenses (and I'm in the states so laws may vary). I'm due to renew mine; I actually went today but they were closed. I didn't think of it until I read Nel's post, but will there be a question about "Do you have any medical conditions" and if so, do people answer yes? I know this is totally off topic.

PS I did say YES , around time of diagnosis .
Zoe - if you respond 'yes' to the question about diabetes, epilepsy, heart problems etc. it WILL instigate a request from the ministry to get a form completed by a doctor of their choosing and until that time your license will be suspended. I only say this because it happened to me years ago.
I feel, if you are OK to drive. If your eyes, sugars and head are all clear enough, then it's irrelevant whether you have a disease or not and it's nobody else's business what you need to do to ensure that you are not a safety risk for anyone else on the road. Of course, the opposite is also true and if you are NOT ok to drive, for whatever reason, then you should not drive.
We need to be adults about this and drive only when it is safe to do so. I just don't believe it is up to any government to determine my suitability to drive.
Heck, Zoe, I even put "No" when it asked about any mental illness! Just stick you tongue way back in your cheek and mark the 'no' box with a clear conscience and then MAKE SURE you are good to drive.

As Bikette said...the minute you check off the "yes" box....you've opened up a can of worms. Yes, you need to be honest....but you are not being DIShonest by answering to a "no". All you are saying is that your medical conditions are a non issue.

I have never had an accident or a speeding ticket...so ya...penalize me!
Neither have I had an accident or speeding ticket Linda ...another reason to be very grateful !!!...
