On Friday, January 11th, Francine Ratner Kaufman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer for Medtronic Diabetes, will be appearing live on the TuDiabetes homepage to discuss “The Use and Future Use of CGM” and answer YOUR questions! Francine Ratner Kaufman, M.D. has had a 30 year distinguished career in diabetes care, research and advocacy. Her positions and accomplishments include:
- former head of the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles
- member of the Advisory Council of the Diabetes Branch of the NIH
- chair of the National Institutes of Health funded Studies to Treat (the TODAY Trial) and Prevent (the HEALTHY Trial) Type 2 Diabetes in Youth (STOPP-T2)
- national president of the American Diabetes Association in 2002-03
- wrote Insulin Pump Therapy and Continuous Glucose Monitoring: A User’s Guide to Effective Diabetes for the ADA and edited the 5th edition of the ADA’s the Medical Management of Type 1 Diabetes and published over 200 peer-reviewed and invited publications
- author of more than 30 books or book chapters, including Diabesity, which explores the ravages of the global obesity and diabetes epidemics
- principal investigator of TrialNet, a multinational consortium evaluating ways to prevent type 1 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- frequently travels around the world, including Haiti, India and the continent of Africa to support the care and management of children with diabetes worldwide

"There's no proof in diabetes that social networking is helpful," says Jason Bronner, a doctor at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. He's leading a study that will help determine whether social networking can actually help patients manage diabetes."
Does Dr. Kaufman agree with this statement ? Is Dr. Kaufman a member of a DOC ? If not why, if so does she recommend the DOC as a resource for her patients or her patients' parents ?

I frequently get an erroneous low alarm while I am sleeping when I roll over on the CGM. Have you ever heard of this before?
Also, I had a similar erroneous low when I went up a chairlift last January and increased elevation rapidly. Do most skiers with CGMs turn them off when they ski?

i,ve had t1 for 75 + years am on 522 minimed pump for 12 years & love it but why does medicare not cover cgm??? they also don't want to pay for enough strips to test my bg when i need to. i have hypo-unawareness so i need to test often.

I am wondering when the government will recognize that a CGM is an effective tool for control and management. When will they approve their use and begin covering their cost for the unit and its sensors?

one more Emily from across the line : I am still confused as a Veo pumper how to appropriately bolus , when still insulin on board from previous correction or food bolus ...it appears to be a " guessing game " even after reading John Walsh's 4 th Edition Pumping Insulin at pages 48 , 49 .Hope Dr. Kaufman can enlighten me ...thanks
