Whats the most annoying comment you've ever gotten about diabetes?

I've gotten quite a lot of really annoying and sometimes even hurtful comments about my diabetes...

When i told a family friend who (by the way) is an assistant nurse about my condition she said "really? but you will get better right? it will go away when you start taking care of yourself?"
and i said "no, i will always be a diabetic and i will actually get worse since my body will eventually stop producing insulin all together"
and she still kept insisting that I would get better in time and that my condition would go away...

i couldnt believe she knew so little

As an old dancer this is the stuff of my own personal nightmares, Natalie---foot/leg. I get soooo scared everytime my #s are even 10-20 points higher than I like---like now. Nightmares......
People telling me I must have the severe or the bad kind(lol) of diabetes because I have a pump
"Oh, well, you can have honey right, because that's natural. And agave syrup, and maple syrup. "

And this is from my daughter, who I have told many times, NO, I cannot have honey, maple, or agave syrup because they're all high in sugar. It doesn't matter if its "natural sugar" or not, its still sugar.

She's on an anti Splenda kick these days and keeps campaigning for me to use and bake with honey, agave and maple syrup, instead of Splenda.

And this was only last week too.

What really concerns me is that her chances of getting this are about 100% now, and she's still not listening.
Yep, I get that - even from other diabetics! Fruit in large quantities is a no no, as you say, natural sugars are just as bad, or if not more bad because they are often more concentrate!

Here is a solution for your daughter - how about she does her own baking? And when she eats the stuff that she bakes, get her to check her own blood sugars and see what effect it has. Even in a non diabetic her sugars will spike before settling down. I believe that is one reason why everyone struggles with an energy slump after a meal!
Agave syrup is ANYTHING but natural! It's highly processed and 100% fructose, which is really bad for you. Read my discussion on the main page (if it hasn't been knocked off already). Health nuts, GRRRRR!!
Some people think that type 2 is "the mild form" and therefore not "serious".

Huh? Since when?

It KILLED my grandmother, an inch at a time!

Wake up people, type 1, type 2, its ALL diabetes and its all serious!
I agree with you! Thank God for modern treatments! At least we now have more opportunity to control it and more of an understanding - though at least we have a bit more understanding now, that your poor grandmother did not have, even if we do not know everything!
Yeah, we are all blessed to be born in this era of technology. However, It's still up to the individual to take advantage of it. In addition, it's up to the doctors to update their diabetic awareness (including general practitioners) so that people can understand that it IS a very serious disease, whether it's Type 1, 2, MODY, gestational, Syndrome X, and what ever else type of diabetes in the future. They all will end up with some bad complication if it is not addressed long-term...

Thinking about it, and I had forgotten until someone mentioned their granny, my next door neighbour had diabetes - not sure what her treatment was - but she eventually lost both her legs and died of diabetes. When I was first diagnosed (wrongly, with Type 2) my mother said that I would start to smell bad .... probably this old lady did smell because she had urinary infections and lived in a one up, one down house with no bathroom ..... Any bad smell, and she thinks it is me!
when i say i'm on an insulin pump and they reply with "your diabetes is THAT bad?"
---or---
when they tell horror stories of their family member's complications
I can think of so many...

My favorite is probably, "How bad is it?" or when people ask how many shots I do a day and any more than one or two (I probably take like 7 a day) automatically means I'm in bad control and it "must be really bad." I'm a type 1 diabetic and have no insulin production, of course I take multiple shots a day!!!

Also, I don't like it when uneducated type 2s try to tell me what I can and can't eat. This happens all the time if I go to friends family get togethers! My friends are always quick to lead me to their diabetic relatives and while they will think it will be a nice moment of bonding, they will typically spend the day judging my food choices. Don't judge me if I want some tasty chocolate mousse or ice cream and apple pie! I don't indulge all that much so when I do, I want the good stuff! I'm not judging your food choices!
oh yes I get that all the time. I finally went to the insulin pump cause i was up 10 12 shot per day..yeah but that is my favorite one to "how bad is it" or they act like it is some kind infection that can be cleared up in 14days with antibotics
