But "forewarned is forearmed" and please realize most people are trying to be helpful. I've had D T1 for 32 years and I have been in the almost dead situation and the hospital made me even sicker, so hearing these stories are intended to help you avoid them, not to scare you.
Permalink Reply by Prince on February 13, 2013 at 11:28am I totally agree. I know about all of the ramifications that can come with loss of control. But I do not want to be reminded of them all of the time. Do encourage me to keep up with my health...but don't take take away all of my hope!
Permalink Reply by caseylynn39 on February 7, 2013 at 8:00pm I had a girl tell me the same thing once. She was one of those super health people that doesn't believe in western medicine and relies on bee pollen for everything...She looked me straight in the eye and said, "You didn't have to get diabetes. You could change that if you really wanted to." I never spoke to her again.
Permalink Reply by Natalie ._c- on February 7, 2013 at 8:36pm You should have said to her "You didn't have to be a moron. You could change that if you really wanted to!" And THEN walked away!
Permalink Reply by Brian (bsc) on February 8, 2013 at 4:55am You could have also looked her back straight in the eye and noted that while perhaps there is some chance that you could cure your diabetes, you were really quite thankful to not have her incurable case of stupid.

Permalink Reply by David (dns) on February 15, 2013 at 11:41am That's a tough one. We've all experienced something of the sort at one time or another. When it's from someone like that -- someone who cares about you and genuinely wants to help -- the best response is to use it as a teachable moment. They want the best for you and are just badly misinformed. If possible, treat it as an opportunity to (gently) supply an antidote to the bad information they've been given.
Permalink Reply by Bathyscaph on February 21, 2013 at 1:55pm I've had at least two people offer to cure me of diabetes through psychic healing. They both meant well so I don't really take offense but it is just so misguided. I never really take any of it personally since almost nobody understands what Type I is unless they have it or have a close friend or family member with it.
Permalink Reply by lotsofshots on February 15, 2013 at 5:44pm I went to a doctor I had never seen before. I told him I had Type 1 diabetes for 24 years. Do you know what he asked me? "Do you take insulin?" OMG, I almost ran out of the office!
