TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Similar to the "You know you're a diabetic when...." this is "You know you have low blood sugar when...."

Today, mine was, "You know you have low blood sugar when you're in the supermarket, and you wander past the eggs half a dozen times while wondering, 'Where the @#$% are the eggs?'"

(For any of you who might do that when your blood sugar is perfectly normal, I was also feeling lightheaded and was perspiring heavily at the time!)

Oh my gosh! Or when your driving and start going off the road and a cop stops you and asks if you're drunk and you say "I'm not drunk, I'm diabetic!"

You know you have a low blood sugar when you "come round/get your memory back" and your biology teacher has his jam covered finger in your mouth in an attempt to cover your gums with jam and you try to stand up but your fellow students and teachers push you down and you start crying and kicking people.
And...
you know you have a low blood sugar when you "come round/get your memory back" and realise that you are no longer in the car but instead are suddenly lying down on a hospital bed surrounded by nurses who are sticking needles into your arm in an attempt to fill a tube with your blood and you have sick all down your top and on your jeans and in your hair and a really sweet and sick taste in your mouth, but you have no idea what happened or how you got there!

Since I sweat alot normally, it is not a good indicator. I notice when I confuse easy and wander from room to room in my little place not knowing what I am looking for. The feeling is hard to describe with a low sugar, I call it feeling oogey.

You know you have low blood sugar when you wake up at night for no apparent reason and have a case of the sweats and usually a headache to match...

And the fog doesn't lift when you sit up...

when everything and everyone annoys you, especially someone asking, "is your blood sugar low?"

when , in the middle of the night, the stairs down to the kitchen seem like a death trap....

You know you have low blood sugar when you are standing in a Canadian Airport buying travel necessities and asking the stunned checkout girl which currency you need... " are we still in America, or Canada ... which money do you need" and having your teenage son go into your wallet and take out the required money for you stating we can pay either money.

Or waking up in the middle of the night insisting you have to test and do it again with the lancet in your hand stabbing your own sore little fingers LOL..... (you have to laugh or you'd cry) and still NOT eating anything.

Or having an animalistic urge ... attacking the fruit bowl and pushing into your mouth just as fast as you can.. almost inhaling it. ( I think sometimes your body knows instinctively what it needs and knows it needs it fast) Thank god I didn't have witnesses to this event! :>(
