Michele: When my glucose is very high I give my self an injection in the forearm and it brings the number down quickly. Living with diabetes is a constant challenge. I have horrible days when I don't feel well and then I have a good diabetic day and I feel like I am on top of the world. I have been wearing a pump for 15 years and it is not the final solution to living with diabetes. It contributes to stability but we constantly need to adjust.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the support. I'm glad your eating is better, Audrey, and that my advice helped. I'll cheer up - just having a down day! I'm tired of working on the carb ratios. You are sooooo right, Carlton. I could correct really well with shots after doing it for years, and I'm still learning this pump stuff. Dipping +1 protein now too, so it's adding to my concern to get the A1c lower.

Michele

Given the schedule of a specialist, I suspect that on MDI as I was (running around the world as a 24/7 diplomat for 20 years) you simply whipped out the pen when things were out of whack, knowing your precise ratios to get back down to the 5's - the pump is smart but if we know what we are doing we can be too. You know better than most of us that it is also the stability that counts, and although I am not a doc, I do have over 3500 laser photocoagulation scars on my retinas.....and wish I had been on a pump for the last 10 years! Only two months now...but good on you for managing to be under 6 as a physician - I quit medicine some 35 years ago because I never would have made it through alive...Type 1 since childhood....

Michele: The A1c relationship to the meter average is obviously hard to tie down for many of us. My A1c has been in the 8 range for a while and I am working on my food intake. I am still eating an English muffin for breakfast and have cut down on my food intake. As a result my results are better. i am going to see my NP tomorrow to look at my meter results-actually I have downloaded the pump. I am back on the Minimed pump. I had to stop the Animas because of absorption problems in my lower ab area and the needle continued to bend in the supper abdomen area. It was quite disappointing but I feel better. The tudiabetes web site has helped me immensely and especially your comments about how you eat. My results are not perfect but everyone says I look so much better.

I got my first post-pump A1c today - up from 5.6 to 6.0. I am a bit dejected. I know it's still a good number but my optho doc wanted it under 5.5 since I had some moderate nonproliferative retinopathy. My meter average was 119 so I was expecting around 5.4. Some days it seems like I am working harder than I did with shots. I feel guilty complaining when others are having more trouble than I am.

Congrats Camden. And good job Emily B. My friends son started his 2 weeks after I did in Jan. and he got his A1C today too. He was down to 10 from 14. Sounds like at least 3 of us had a good day.
