TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

I just started Byetta today and am anxious to see if it is better than Januvia or Avandia. This is a big step for me and I am looking to see how others feel about this new drug.

Type 2, age 61 - I have been on Byetta since July of 07. I have never had any of the issues you read about. It is interesting to note that those that have had trouble scream the loudest. I lost 17lbs before I changed diets to Low Carb and have continued to loose weight. Currently I am about 42lbs down. I work very hard at this so my results my differ from everyone else.
I have built up to 5+ miles a day walking - Monday thru Friday. My last A1C was 4.9, that was on Tuesday of this week. My TC was 130 with HDL @ 49, LDL < too small to measure. I had my GP fax my lab resluts to my Endo. That prompted a phone call from my Endo. Never been called by a physician with positive feed back.

Hi Jeff & Russell,
My endo just put me on Byetta. I'm still trying to get used to it. The first 2 weeks have been tough. A lot of nausea and stomach aches. I'm hoping these side effects will subside soon.. :)

I have been on Byetta for about 2 years. I don't remember ever getting any nausea or stomach aches from it. Every person is different, as I have had side effects from meds that give other people no problem.

I use it along with Starlix, which I take before eating. I find that it works very well. I fine tune the starlix, taking two pills when I eat a more carb heavy meal.

It depends how your body works and how much medicine you need. Wish I could be more helpful .

I hope I am not on it for 2 years. My wife is taking me out to eat tonight and I had to bring a pin to work so I could shoot before we go in to eat.

So, do find that you get bad stomach aches if you take it earlier or later than normal?? I had a really, and I mean a really bad day yesterday. I took the shot earlier than normal and my stomach hurt so bad and I was nauseous up until I went to bed last night.. I did not particularly care for this side effect.. Karla

It has been a while since I got off my time schedule. This is one thing I have found is that diabetes likes is consistant scheduling. If I am off one way or the other my Byetta does not bother me but my numbers go off. If I am 1 hour late my BG reading will be 20 + higher than normal. Stick with it. I am down 45 lbs since July. Now I have picked up my walking to 5 miles a day and gone LOW CARB. I did loose 17lbs during the first two months of Byetta. I attribut the remaining loss to LOW CARB and walking.

I hear everyone talking about a time schedule. I listened to the DVD that was included and dont remember hearing about a time schedule. What does this mean? Because there are times I take the Byetta and later feel real bad even eccessively tired.

Diabetes like for you to do everything at the same time each day. If you take your evening shot 1 hour later then more than likely your BG readings at that time will be higher than if at your regular time. I get up during the week at 4:55am but made it till 7am on the weekends but my numbers were so different that I started getting up at 4:55am on the weekends also. Shot and eat at my regular times and my numbers stay in the 80's and 90's. This is with my 5 miles walking every day. If I sleep late my numbers jump to the 110 to 120 and it takes till Wednesday to get them back down. Understand that I am very strick on myself with the LOW CARB diet. I try to stay below 30g of carbs per day.

Wow, it sounds like you got it down well! So, the Byetta really helps to lose weight?? How long after you started using it did you see results.. Right now, I am doing one mile per day on the treadmill, I try to run and walking fast. I don't have a lot of time to spend on the treadmill but I want to make sure I'm getting my heart rate up, at least to burn some calories.

It took about a week and I could see results. I started walking 1 mile but worked my way up. I started at a 20 min mile and I am now consistantly below 16min miles. I walk 30 min at a time. I don't punish myself if I don't get 30 min. Some days I am tired and others my arthritus hurts so I cut back.

I just got off Byetta and I'm so happy. i used it since October with excellent results. blood sugar normal and a1c down from 9.1 to 6.3. Plus I lost almost 50lbs. I had problems with nausea in the first couple of weeks and then problems in the last few weeks with nausea. I found that when I was travelling and out to dinner I would take it when I ordered my meal and then I would feel bad for hours. The best schedule for me was to take it a full 1/2 hour before eating. Then I wouldn't feel so bad.

Now I'm on Janumet and I'm hoping with that and diet I'll not be back to shooting up the lizard spit ever again. Best of luck with it! I credit it with doing great things for me.

Been on Byetta since April 07 and loving it. I did have all the stomach problems that you hear about but struggled through it for about a month. Once I heeded the advise from my cde on not eating to much and taking it at least 15 mins before I ate the stomach issues went away. In the first 7 months on it I lost just over 60lbs. I still have about 30 to 40 lbs to loose, I may have to actually start an exercise program to loose the rest of the weight. Stomach issues and all I am very pleased with what Byetta has done to help me get in controll and loose the extra weight. I sing it's praises to anyone that wants to know what works for me.
