I've followed a low carb diet for some time and despite that my blood sugar control has degraded. So a year ago I started Byetta, but to little avail. I started with a new doctor about four months ago, and he asked that I start eating more carbs. So I did, not at the level he suggested, but 30-40 g at my Byetta meals. Certainly beyond what I can routinely tolerate.
My postprandials got worse, and I was only able to get below 140 mg/dl at 2 hrs about half the time. But something seemed to have improved. After 3 months of doing this, my HbA1c dropped nearly half a point from 6.1 to 5.7. I am certainly pleased, but a bit confused.
Has anyone gotten similar advice? Eat more carbs? What exactly is happening? I don't see how this could be working, but it did.
