TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

I've followed a low carb diet for some time and despite that my blood sugar control has degraded. So a year ago I started Byetta, but to little avail. I started with a new doctor about four months ago, and he asked that I start eating more carbs. So I did, not at the level he suggested, but 30-40 g at my Byetta meals. Certainly beyond what I can routinely tolerate.

My postprandials got worse, and I was only able to get below 140 mg/dl at 2 hrs about half the time. But something seemed to have improved. After 3 months of doing this, my HbA1c dropped nearly half a point from 6.1 to 5.7. I am certainly pleased, but a bit confused.

Has anyone gotten similar advice? Eat more carbs? What exactly is happening? I don't see how this could be working, but it did.

Hi bsc,
Well, I wish I could tell U which way it is...because I have been on Byetta since it was first approved by the FDA.....This summer, I was experiencing terrible lows on Byetta 10...about an hour after I ate (Didn't matter if there were more carbs or less carbs...I tried both)....Went down to Byetta 5, and still had lows, and within this past 2 weeks, I am suddenly running in the mid 200's, no matter what I eat and no matter if I add prandin or starlix with the meal! Still waiting on what to do from my doctor...he had wanted me to get set w/a CGM;
But I'm also scheduled for my gall bladder to come out in another week...

Good luck!

Michele, it sounds like you have really struggled with things lately. It may be that your blood sugar may also be driven up with your inflammed gall bladder. Perhaps after you get that straightened out your blood sugar will improve. It does seem that only some people respond to Byetta and that for a small group, they are very sensitive to Byetta. I've even heard of some using even smaller doses by diluting the byetta. Perhaps you are in that group of hyperresponders.

absolutely! My endo and dietition said more carbs???? Makes as little sense as giving insulin to insulin resistant type 2 diabetics. I too do not understand these theories.

Carolyn, I've had lots of doctors and dieticians tell me to eat lots of carbs. But this was the first time I heard some explanation of why and what struck me was that it seemed to work. I'm just trying to figure it out. If this works, then perhaps when the once a week byetta comes out I could actually loosen up on the whole diet thing. After spending a couple years on the Bernstein diet, that would be quite a relaxation of my diet.
