TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Soooo, how do other people handle testing and giving shots while out and about? I've been giving my shots to myself at my desk at work, but so no one can see. For testing, I've been running to the ladies room, but sometimes that's really inconvenient. How about in restaurants or church? Do you experience prejudice or judgement? Thanks for the discussion!!

If I am going out sometimes I give myself a shot in the car. If I am in a Restaurant I go to the restroom. If I am out playing Bingo I just sneak a shot in under my shirt. No one notices or care.

I tend to give myself a shot in the car either on the way to the restaurant or in the parking lot (depending on the quality of service, if I know they are quick, I shoot on the way, if I know they are slow, in the lot). If I am going in town, (I live in a small town) I shoot before leaving the house.

I have no problem with checking at my desk. I don't even make attempts to hide it. It is a poke in the finger and nothing has to be exposed.

Thanks to everyone for your comments concerning testing and "shooting" in public!! Evelyn Nutting: You had mentioned about wearing a bracelet for nausea. Where did you get that bracelet? What is it called? Thanks for your feedback and I hope you are well.

I test wherever I am, and I usually give myself shots and take pills also wherever I am...I figure it's a part of my life, and altho I attempt to be discreet and not offend anyone, I have to live my life as comfortable and the best way I know how. If anyone is staring, I ask if they have questions...but usually no one really notices what I'm doing....When I was on insulin, I did excuse myself and went to the bathroom so I could measure my insulin in a better lite...but now I take Byetta, so, if we are going out to eat, I can just take out the pen and take the shot pretty much under the table or tablecloth, unless I have on clothes like a dress...then I go to the restroom and take that shot in private....But since I have to take it about 30 minutes before I eat, I usually take it in the car right before we go into the restaurant. As far as oral meds...I just take them whenever I have a glass of water...No one really cares...some probably think I'm taking an aspirin!

Good luck!

Michele
