Barb , a belated update : BC with special authority supplies pumps to kids to age 18 as of November 17, 2008 ...more letter writing to one's MLA about expansion . Our Health Minister , George Abbott's in whose riding I live very awere, how an insulin pump has positively impacted my life and that of my loved ones .

Yes, that was my thought too. What about the important child-bearing years? The better control the lower risks for the baby. Seems important. Im late 30s and bought my own pump for baby #2. I had to take 3 days off work and travel out of province to get someone to do a pump start (live on PEI). Also when these kids turn 18 +1 day, they still need pump replacements. You can't just leave them hanging. Pumps don't last forever. So much work to be done to ensure everyone in Canada gets a chance for the "gold standard" of diabetes treatment.

rainbowgoddess, you are so correct....all those 18 year olds will turn into healthy 19 year olds ....and how about the people with type 2 insulin dependent diabetes, that would do better, be more productive , if they had an insulin pump ?? Please write or speak with your MLA and ask your friends, living in BC to do same ....advocacy , advocacy , advocacy .
I recall reading comments in the news papers and on blogs from people in our province , who were outraged, because pumps for( most ) kids are supplied .
They likely have not lived the kind of life you have lived since you were diagnosed.

I see this is an old discussion, but I thought I would throw in for the benefit of Ontario diabetics out there that funding is available for Type-1 adults in Ontario for insulin pump supplies. I applied last month and just received my first cheque ($600 for 3 months of supplies) in the mail yesterday. Yahoo!
By the way, this funding for Type-1 adults began in September 2008... however I just found out about it 2 months ago during my last endocrinologist appointment. Obviously, the gov't doesn't exactly advertise when they are giving away money.... I blogged about this a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Lori D ..Congrats on getting pump and supplies . We in BC have to do more home work with the Government !.This is what Barb noted in her Discussion " Ontario became the first province to cover adults with Type 1 diabetes " , August 2008 . This information was also available on the CDA's website at about the same time Barb posted this .
It is very helpful , that you added your comment , since more people may read this again .

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is currently holding pre-budget consultations. It is important that they understand how important it is to expand the insulin pump program beyond age 25 AND include the coverage of CGM for those who wish to use one. Thanks Barb , the advocate . I am using some of your info in the letter I am writing to the Nova Scotia MLA's who need to know about pumps and me at age 72 living with D almost 30 years and going strong . ..why re-invent the wheel ?? and you said it sooooo well .

As you may have heard, Albertans are about to go to the polls on April 23. A canadidate for PC leadership included funding insulin pumps in his platform but unfortunately lost to Alison Redford.
