I have had Type 1 for a year and a bit now. I am having a heck of a time managing my sugar levels. I was on injections from diagnosis and have been on the pump since November. My A1C has pretty much not budged.... 8.8, 8.6, 8.8. Depsite being off work from Dec until just last week so that I could try and get things under control, things are still totally wonky -- highs, lows, sometimes my body almost treats insulin like it is sugar - I swear !

Anyway, what I think would certainly help is an intensive retreat, such as what I read about Jostens in Boston, where your days are totally focused by medical personnel with testing, suggesting, etc. etc. Is there such a thing in Canada devoted to Type 1's? I currently have a family doctor, diabetes educator/nurse affiliated with the diabetes client and an endocronologist....however, appts are hard to get and usually you are dealing with 2-3 month waits. Those appointments are usually 1-2 hrs long and then I am sent on my way. It makes it difficult to follow through with them when making adjustments, etc. when you only see them every couple of months.

I hope this is all making sense. It has been a rough week, so it is kinda hard to get thoughts together and written to make sense.

You were diagnosed as a T1, and you are an adult? Are you sure you didn't mean T2? just asking.

I'm in the Quebec province and there was something like that, 3 weeks ago. I wanted to go but, i could not affoard it. What part of Canada are you?
Yup, I am a 1. I have the honor of being my endo's only one of that age. I am in Nova Scotia but I would be willing to travel elsewhere.
Jley22, I like to suggest to get a hold of Tu member Jen ( Hanson ) ...she is on the Canadian site as well and maybe she can help you .
I googled your question , however it seems to be for type 2's the way I read it .
I'm Toronto. I know that Women's College Hospital used to have something like a week long course around all things diabetes. You need to be referred by your physician and I'm not sure if you have to be living in Toronto. I have done the course a couple of times. It's been a good refresher course... though I know the staff has changed a bit since I was there last and the program has gone through some shifts. I'm not sure how this has impacted things. The clinic is called Tridec and their site is here: http://www.womenscollegehospital.ca/programs/program107.html

I am more than willing to help you out if you want to email/chat. I'm not a medical personel, but I've had Type 1 for going on 18 years and I can at least offer some support. Do you think that part of what might be happening with you is that you are coming out of the honeymoon phase? Things can get tricky during that time...

As for Jen (she is great!), I am friends with her and she helps run a group called Connected in Motion (http://www.connectedinmotion.ca/ ). They are having a canoe trip one weekend in August. The trip is full, but you can register to be put on the waiting list. There is another event they do on a weekend in January. If you follow them on Facebook they also post various events going on around the country and sometimes from the US.

I hope some of this is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions...

Hi JLey,

I was also diagnosed with type 1 later than most and it is so frustrating that every thing I find is about type 2, which is ok but I really would like more information on type 1. There doesn't seem to be enough support or information around people getting type 1 in adulthood.
I think there is generally a lack of type 1 supports for adults, but it's especially frustrating when newly diagnosed :(

It's not quite the same, but: I was diagnosed when I was in my teens and too old for any of the camps, so I didn't even know anyone else with diabetes until a year or two ago... I remember trying to at least find support groups and they told me there were none available at the time for people with type 1. At least the internet came along, but it really shouldn't be the only thing there for people.

Anyway, I will keep you guys in mind and let you know if I hear of anything happening in your areas...

Jley, am I correct in my thinking, that you likely are aware of this program ?? ...yes waiting for appointments as you mentioned for 2 -3 months is less than ideal !!
Is your Medtronic Pump Nurse available to you ?? Use the person, please !!!

I received an invite from Chris Jarvis yesterday for a July event in the Okanagan, BC ...a little bit of research took me here : http://www.eventbrite.com/org/802030185?s=4405771 He has lots of stuff happening Canada wide ...hope useful
This is exactly what I was thinking. There really should be programs that are not so pricey. If anyone hears of anything in the Manitoba area please let me know.
