I am just curious as I cannot stand the MM CGM, interesting enough, my extended medical has pre approved the Dexcom Device, but in order to order it, you have to have a US Doctors prescription. I was just curious if anyone knows any way around this.

Thanks for your time.

Ah, thanks for the information. I'm in Toronto.

How many sensors are you buying?
Right now just 1 box, that is what the Dexcom rep recommended just to "make sure"
Well its a done deal. I have the Dexcom Seven Plus in hand and charging as we speak.

Before going to the US and picking it up , I called the "Border Services" and asked them if it was subject to our provincial tax. They would not answer the question until I found out what Health Canada Had to say. Border Services said this for my own protection, to make sure that it was not illegal in Canada. I called Health Canada and a gentlemen Ken Sito called me ack and basically said, if it is for personal use it can be brought into Canada without any questions.

Saturday I went and piclked it up. Now the question was, do I unbox it, and just put it o myself and bring it across. If asked just say it is my CGMS for my diabetes. I also had my tester with me and obviously my insulin pump as well. OR, do I be above board and pay the 12% tax. I thought it would be best to be above board.

Now unfortuantly when I picked it up, there was no invoice with it only a packing slip. I totally didnt think of printing the invoice off before going across. I proceeded to the Customs drive up window and the gentlemen asked me the usual question. I said Yes, I have a diabetic Continuous Glocose monitor that was for my personal use. He then asked the value, I said $1,500.00 I then said unfortunatly they did not put in a recipet and all that I had was a packing slip. If need be I can leave it here (at the border) and come back with the reciept. He thought for a few seconds and said, next time please print off a reciept before coing down and....have a nice day. WOHOOOOOOOO !!! No hassles.

I am so happy and cannot wait to try this device out. It looks awesome, the body parts sensor, and transmitter are tiny, but the actual monitor or display device is kind of bulky, a little larger than the animas One Touch Ping Pump.

Hope this info helps anyone who is considering bringing one into Canada before its release here.
Excellent! I'm so glad it was problem-free for you, and I'm sure you're enjoying it right now.

All the info will be really helpful, too. Thanks!
Great to hear that things worked out, let us know how the sensor works for you. I too am moving forward, I have a prescription filled out, I am just waiting for it to arrive in the mail (hopefully the postal strike doesn't get out of hand). I have friends who live near the border and have family just accross the border that said I could ship to them and they would bring it accross the border and forward it to me. What price did Dexcom charge you? Is the $1500 for the starter kit plus an extra box of sensors? I am waiting for the Dexcom rep to get back to me as he said they often will give cash discount programs. Did they give you any details on the upgrade to the G4 system (likely in 2012)?
Jesse,
How will you be getting your replacement sensors? Will Dexcom UK ship directly to Canada or do you need to have your relative forward them on to Canada?
Is the UK version in mmol/L or mg/dl? Their website shows a picture with mg/dl, but you mentioned mmol/L in your post earier.
I have finally got my US prescription in the mail (stupid postal strike!) and am working out a few shipping details. Just wondering if the UK version is a better option. What was the price for the starter kit and replacement sensors?
Chad,

The UK version is in mmol/L, which is what made me go with that option. I think they use all the US promotional material as the representative told me to look at the US site for tutorials and information but clarified that while the photos are all in mg/dl the UK device is mmol/L.

I would have to have the sensors forwarded to me from the UK. However, the US sensors are compatible with the UK system so I think I'll try to arrange to get sensors from the US first as it would be easier.

As for costs, the system was £1000 and each box of four sensors £250, plus a £7.50 delivery fee. The conversion obviously depends on whatever the exchange rate is; I'm not sure how much that's fluctuating. If I'm not mistaken, the exchange rate makes it more expensive than buying the US version.
I have been emailing back and fourth with Dexcom lately and they have said that they are no longer trying to launch the Seven Plus in Canada and plan to launch the G4 system in late 2012, they are going to be filing the system with the US FDA shortly and once that has been approved they plan to file for health Canada approval and this will take us into mid to late 2012 before the product hits the market. This is really disapointing, but makes the choice to buy from the US seem like a much better option.
Hey there Chad. I have been wearing the sensor now for 3 days, and just like all of the posts say it definitley does take the sensor 1 day to settle down. All of my readings now are within 10% of my fingerstick which is awesome. As for inserting the sensor and everything, man what a breeze compared to the Minimed one. A small little sting, but that is it. As for wearing the sensor. i dont even know I have it on. Awesome device and I am so very glad that I went through all of this to get it.

You asked above about the $1,500.00, yes that included an extra charge for overnight shipping and 1 box of sensors. The sales rep recommended only getting 1 box to start.

As for the upgrade, it did not concern me as I just switched to the Animas One Touch Ping, and talking with Anthony the local rep, he told me about the Animas Vibe which included the G4 Sensor. When it is released in Canada, I will be upgrading to this device for a $500.00 fee. I was expecting end of 2011, so realistically it will be mid 2012.

Just to end off here, the only thing that is a little tricky is doing the conversion from ML to Mmol, it is a simple change mulitply or divide by 18. I put a small cheat sheet on the back on the transistor that has all of the readings, so I can do a quick look up.

Hope this helps, as I said, I am EXTREMELY happy with this device so far. I am looking forward to downloading the report once the sensor is done. I will only use this sensor for 1 week, but from all of the readings, you can extend the life well beyond a week.

Cheers.
Great to hear that you are happy with the accuracy. I spoke with the Dexcom rep and he said no cash discounts, so I will be paying the same as you did. I have all of my info ready and have met with all of the pump and sensor companies, I have an appointment with my endo in 2 weeks, so I am not going to move forward with anything until then. So now I impatiently wait.....
Does anyone know how much would you pay out of pocket for a box of Dexcom sensors?
