TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Hi!!

Just wanted to know if anyone has heard of any support groups in Toronto. I called the CDA and there is nothing in my area (Mississsauga)...IF anyone knows of one please let me know. If not I am thinking of creating one in my area.

Thanks

Go for it ;-) Start a meet -up Rizwana...some publicity , at diabetes centers and get support from a Health Team at these centers , in the local papers; maybe a listing on the CDA website; your local grocery store, your local library , in the malls , on windows of a mall outlet; pharmacy outlets , exercise centers ...I live in a community of 17,000 and all this is possible .
Keep us updated, please and be well .
Another thought : maybe you like to participate with Team Diabetes Canada ...good for YOUR health and millions of other Canadians living with Diabetes .Let me know, if you have questions.

I started one a few months ago here in Victoria, but so far I haven't had anyone come to the meetings. I'm going to post an ad at the CDA office and see if that attracts anyone. Maybe the fact that you're in a larger city will help you attract more people.

Hi Rizwana,

I have done some digging myself and haven't been able to find any support groups in the GTA.
I too live in Mississauga - if you want to create a group I'd be willing to help out.

Thank you for all of your great advice!!! I will def. post around the community. I would love the help of starting a group...just a place for us to get together and share our experience, and of course even vent :). Despite the fact that we have this wonderful community online I would love to meet with people in the GTA face to face.

Are you both living in Miss.....?
A chap new to Salmon Arm , recently diagnosed , will lead a group of type 1-ers and family members on a hike ,rain or shine ( or snow !!) this November 1 , Sunday , celebrating/recognizing the start of Diabetes Month ...he did his home work and got the request in 2 local papers ( for free) .
I'll ask him to next time post it here on TU ...he is not a member yet ...my job to work on that next ;-)

I live in the Port Credit area of Mississauga.
I agree it would be great to meet with people face to face!
Maybe we could start be deciding on a date and place the work on getting the word out.
Nel - thanks for the info, it would be great to know how your friend got some free publicity in the local
papers - do you know which ones?

Sharon ,
These are free weekly papers , delivered to homes ( on Friday ) and cover the broader area , in which I live ( Shuswap , BC ) , one is called: Lakeshore News , which also has a section : UPCOMING EVENTS , second one : Shuswap Market News ...the latter one is published on Fridays by the weekly Wednesday Salmon Arm Observer ( not free ) and has a section designated for Upcoming events as well .Hope this helps.
PS using Facebook maybe another way of letting your community know a Meet-up ??

Hi GTA'ers!

I am BRAND NEW to tudiabetes (joined 2 minutes ago!) but felt compelled to join simply to reply to this post!

Check out CONNECTED IN MOTION at www.connectedinmotion.ca

It is not a 'support group' per se....but an organization I started this year which uses outdoor adventure and physical activity as a forum for experiential diabetes education for people living with Type 1 diabetes.

Don't know if this would apply/appeal to you - but we have been getting together all year to....ski, snowshoe, run, hike, cycle, rock climb, go to conferences and even to go apple picking yesterday! ALL in, around or pretty darn close to the GTA.

The creation of Connected in Motion stemmed from my frustrations that there really was NOTHING...or least NOTHING I personally wanted to get involved with that was all that inspiring....happening in and around the GTA.

Chloe ...would you believe this ...a small world we live in for sure .
Today I received Shawn's CD's : Sweet Success: Living Well with Diabetes ...I played the first CD ...and there you are ...the power of getting together with other people with diabetes ...I was told at the CDA's NAGM that Shawn showed a video on Oct. 22 ( Regional delegates did not attend this meeting...I am one ) ...I can see , that folks may want to connect to www.connectedinmotion.ca ...maybe we ( YOU/I ) could ask Shawn to become a TU member and he can show his video ...what do you think ?
PS I will see Chris Jarvis this month ( twice ??)

My partner, also a diabetic lives in MISSISSAUGA and we will be glad to have you join our group. The reasonwe usethe BLUE ROSE is because of its meanin. '
ATTAINING THE IMPOSSIBLE' our mission and motto. On November 13 we will having a TEA PARTY, at 400 West Mall, WESBURN MANOR, to see howmany would be interested in forming a support group. My number is 416-255-2072, my e-mail is clarence.haynes@sympatico.ca Keep in touch AMIGO.
