Children and adults with type 1 diabetes MAY qualify for a Federal and Provincial Disability Tax credit.
I could not find a discussion on this topic ...so here goes : I found on the Childrens Hospital , Vancouver , BC 's website : dtcdiab.pdf( 69KB ) ....I am the gal , that does not know much about computers, so I hope you are able to open this without problems, alternatively google BC Childrens Hospital Vancouver, link to Endocrinology & Diabetes Unit , Diabetes handouts, Especially for parents and caregivers. The CDA website , under advocay has a heading as well .
I have successfully applied in the past , however my GP did not complete the form correctly for 2007 tax year and I was denied...I have more home work to do for the coming tax year. My Specialist said, that she will sign the form , so I am optimistic( as a pumper and CGM user ) .

Edit, December 19, 2010.

...According to the posting I added :  Registered Disability Savings Plan is dependent on qualifying for the DTC .

Edit , Jan . 14, 2011 with thanks to Jimmy !! ...the link to the printable form ; please note it states , one cannot save the form on the computer

Edit( thanks Peetie for the ASK ) : May 26, 2012 T2's on MDI/insulin pumping and testing intensively may qualify

The things you have to watch out for being labelled disabled are things that you already should be watching out for. For example, some places have restrictions on driving (need to test before starting car, x number of hours after driving, etc...).

Mostly it is just the social stigma and no one will know unless you tell them. Most people consider disabled as mostly a mental or outwardly visual physical problem.

I agree it should be labelled as something else.

This will next statement will probably sound very tasteless, but I mean absolutely no offense to other groups.

My daughter is the diabetic and to get her the help she needs and the tax credit I have to get her classified the same as the severely autistic boy and the girl who was born addicted and has severe learning issues in her class.

Because of this we have to make her and her teachers understand that she is capable of doing 100% of what everyone else in her class can do. I have asthma and have more physical limitations then her and yet I am not "disabled".

Sorry, sore point for me and the wife.

All calculating carb to insulin ratio and calculation for exercise is NOT APPLICABLE do not include this in the time frame required !!!!

Activities that are considered to be part of following a dietary regime, ,
such as carbohydrate calculation, as well as activities related to
exercise, do not count
toward the 14-hour requirement (even when
these activities or regimes are a factor in determining the daily dosage
of medication).

All of these activities should state Calculations relating to fluctuations of stress.
I have been able to prove, with the help of my Specialist ( she signed the form) without the good points you make ( carb counting, exercise , stress ) , that managing my diabetes takes a min of 14 hours weekly .
Have you been denied ??? ...others have provided here very detailed management specifics .
I have not heard if it is denied but just that I've found in the Larger PDF file it states the above and not to include it.

As far as I know.( back to 2001 ??) this always has been the case for insulin pumpers ...in 2005 ( or was it 2004 ?) what was added : anyone on MDI ...and I believe it also includes type 2's on MDI .
When did you file ?? Is it about 6 weeks it may take to receive a response ??
You should hear back in 6 to 8 weeks that they have received your paperwork, if you dropped it off by hand. It will take at least 3 to 4 months (possibly up to 6 for some cases I have heard of) to hear back whether you have been approved or not. In addition Canada Post is backlogged at least 2 weeks right now.

At an event for pumpers and prospective pumpers earlier this week with the 3 pump reps in attendance , the MC mentioned the Disability Tax Credit and the Disability Savings Plan ...for some this was a news item and they plan to share it with others .
MC also mentioned, that there are companies , who will assist for a fee in completing the forms . Barb 's website was mentioned
www.diabetesadvocacy.com/about_us.htm
NO fee, however a donation towards the upkeep of the website maybe in place !!??

O.K. so this has been along time coming....

I had found out MY letter, from CRA, was sent to the last address of my Dr.
needless to say ....almost a year later it has been re sent to my Dr. at the new address.

I had the chance to go over it with my Dr. to see the latest questions

Q.1 Enter the mount of time spent administering and tending to life sustaining therapy, not carbohydrate calculation, as well as activities related to exercise,

Q.2 Enter the amount of time calculating carbohydrate as well as activities related to exercise.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??

Not sure if they would try to deduct the total from the life sustaining therapy ???

1type2go : the good news is , you should qualify retro-active !! .
Time it takes weekly to Carb counting and Exercise are not included to reach the 14 hours ...others have recorded in the discussion how to arrive at the 14 hours minimum as well ...and your Doc has to complete forms .
Did I understand your comments correctly ?

Wish me luck. Have forms in hand and am off to Endo app't tomorrow. Hoping this will come through for me. I do have one question though. Regarding the back dating. I was diagnosed 4 years ago but have only been on the pump for 3. Does just doing the shots qualify as life sustaining therapy? Any info would be most helpful. :)

dzinermom1 Ya Shots count

One once stated can you drive, cook, have a meaningful conversation,or do anything else while (administering) calculating, drawing up insulin, and the injecting without interruption CONFIDENTLY without making a life altering mistake.

I have this on the thread to peek at PUMP ACTIVITIES: & Mutiple Daily Injections:
On page 12

nel;
I have been accepted and await my return the month. It's bin a long time comin'
