Children and adults with type 1 diabetes MAY qualify for a Federal and Provincial Disability Tax credit.
I could not find a discussion on this topic ...so here goes : I found on the Childrens Hospital , Vancouver , BC 's website : dtcdiab.pdf( 69KB ) ....I am the gal , that does not know much about computers, so I hope you are able to open this without problems, alternatively google BC Childrens Hospital Vancouver, link to Endocrinology & Diabetes Unit , Diabetes handouts, Especially for parents and caregivers. The CDA website , under advocay has a heading as well .
I have successfully applied in the past , however my GP did not complete the form correctly for 2007 tax year and I was denied...I have more home work to do for the coming tax year. My Specialist said, that she will sign the form , so I am optimistic( as a pumper and CGM user ) .

Edit, December 19, 2010.

...According to the posting I added :  Registered Disability Savings Plan is dependent on qualifying for the DTC .

Edit , Jan . 14, 2011 with thanks to Jimmy !! ...the link to the printable form ; please note it states , one cannot save the form on the computer

Edit( thanks Peetie for the ASK ) : May 26, 2012 T2's on MDI/insulin pumping and testing intensively may qualify

Any form of treatment is considered.
Do you have to take Dex4 to treat for a low? Do you have to calculate your carbs and set your pump? Do you have to connect an infusion set?
Everything you do that is outside the "normal" parameters is life sustaining therapy. You also calculate the average time, not just the exact number of minutes for one week.

There is a great site with detailed information on the Tax Disability that I used when I applied and was accepted: http://diabetesadvocacy.com/ Just click on the left side of the page under Tax Disability, and click your way through tons of information on this.

Thanks Carol for getting Barb's website up again ... she is a true Advocate ...glad to read too, that you were accepted ...living with d is expensive enough , so everyone should apply and everyone should share . I know, that the CDA staff in Kelowna mentions the DTC to folks who come to the office and who may qualify

Income splitting (and seniors in this household :) ), qualifying for DTC paid off ...
( small) chq arrived this past Friday,( about 6 weeks later); had been mailed to Surrey , BC office begin April ...

Nel: It seems that this Tax Credit is also for T2s? Do you know anything about this? If it also applies to T2s, I really think the title of this discussion should be changed. Thanks. Joanne

You are correct Peetie , title requires updating ( next on the to do list ) To add : T2's on MDI and testing intensively may qualify " ...another " nice problem " is the amount of responses/suggestions this topic has received . BJ added a follow up discussion ...I know a type 2 , MDI ..she provided me with this knowledge in 2010 .; possibly I will see her at the CDA's Healthier U Expo , June 2 in Kelowna , BC ?? ...and ask her for an update She will have to travel hence the ??

" PS I understand type 2 on MDI may qualify as well for DTC !..as posted
Dec 19 , 2010 ; Barb Wagstaff posted Dec 28 , 2010 Type 2s who use an intensive management system qualify. Pumpers and MDI people qualify. The only way you don't qualify is if you are NOT insulin dependent and you do not test or manage your diabetes intensely (test, bolus, log, etc)"

I am aware, that CDA Kelowna office staff always mention to folks coming into the office and inquiring about diabetes about the DTC( any type , MDI /insulin pumping etc. etc )

I did ask the lady I referred to in May 26 posting ( type 2 MDI ) ...she said , that she has received the Tax credit previously ; however this year her Doc has not signed the form ..I am unsure if this info is helpful??
I am aware of other type 1's , who are not Tu members and have received ...and one person at our pumpers group( last night )will apply .

Any person who requires life sustaining therapy and requires a certain number of hours per week with this therapy are eligible for the tax credit.

T2's may qualify depending on their medical requirements. Taking a pill once a day would not be enough.

T2's are also treated differently in that they most likely will have to complete the form multiple times. T1's usually only have to complete the form once every 7 or 10 years but T2's may be required to complete every year to verify their medical requirements haven't changed.

Please also note that if you have a parent living with you who is T2 and qualifies for the tax credit you may be able to apply some of this to your taxes if they are reliant upon you.

Hi does a type 2 or 1.5 diabetic count as I thinking of looking in to this

Shellyj... If you can proof with Endo's help , because the Person will have to sign the form , that it takes 14 hours weekly to manage your D ( not including shopping, prepping food , exercising ,carb counting ) you may qualify to see a credit ...in other words " go for it " ...if you have a chance read all the responses ...
One needs to have an income to qualify (hence the wording Tax Credit )

My son and I are both Type 1 and pumping. His form was accepted and mine was declined. Mine took forever to hear back. Has anyone else had this issue?

Graeme , my GP several years ago filled out the form ...was declined even after having rec'd the Credit previously (MHO : the way he completed was the concern ) ...I spoke to my Specialist , she signed and no problem ; others in my area are her patient as well and NO problem ...did you have an Endo sign your papers ?? Try again !! ...I hope others will respond with their updated info !!
