Hi SuzP,
I started out on a variety of combinations, when I was diagnosed at 17 - somewhere in my early-ish 20s a doctor suggested I try Lantus (to replace my nph) and I immediately saw a difference; however, I was taken off Lantus (and put back on nph) while pregnant/nursing, so I am not sure if that is something specifically cautionary for newborns or all young children...
As far as I understand Levemir and Lantus are the same thing (Lantus is the brand name), but you may want to confirm that (I have never tried Levemir, only Lantus).
For myself personally, I am happy with Lantus - I like the coverage it gives me and have found my greatest success comes with injecting it at bedtime.

My son is using Lantus insulin since dx in November 2010 (he is now 10). I was using Lantus for years until I switched to a pump a few months ago. We get good results with Lantus and we use Humalog for meals.

I have no experience with Levemir.

My dad and brother were both using Lantus and also had good results however my brother is also now on a pump. The experienced MUCH less low blood sugar in the night with Lantus.

hi SuzP,

i was on 30/70 long acting before, but now i have started combination of Lev-emir and Novo Rapid. i never tried lantus so dont know about it but i can definitely say Levemir is best for me.

I used Lente as my basil for years. it worked fairly well and was consistent. I got sick with serious pnemonia 5 years ago and while in hospiltal, the new dr suggested I move to levemir instead as it was newer, more consistent, etc. I did, and honestly, had troubles ever since. My BG readings were extreemly inconsistent, lots of highs and lots of lows and a1c was terrible and getting worse and worse. I never had that problem before. I can't say the pnemonia did or didn't cause this but it was too conincedental with the change to Levemir. I am now on the Omnipod pump and my BG levels are awesome, not perfect, but way more stable with my a1c dropping like a rock. I should likely have switched to something other than Levemir sooner, but I guess I'm just stuborn. No longer an issue though, just hope i didn't cause too much damage trying to make the Levemir work. Cheers.

Oh, and here's a link talking about the difference between Levemir and Lantis. They appear to be close to the same thing, but different, lol.
