From the Chronicle Herald:

Nova Scotia's deputy minister of health says the province has no plans to fund insulin pumps for young diabetics.

Kevin McNamara told the legislature's public accounts committee today that the Health Department has done an assessment and received advice not to proceed based on existing programs and other funding priorities.

Katherine Fraser, director of acute and tertiary care, says program funding would also be needed to train support staff at the province's 39 diabetes care centres.

Fraser says provincial figures show there are 705 people under the age of 19 who suffer from diabetes in a province where 80,000 people have been diagnosed with the disease.

The Opposition Liberals have introduced several bills in recent years calling on the province to fund an insulin pump program for juvenile diabetes.

Insulin pumps monitor and regulate insulin levels while delivering the drug at a steady rate to suit a patient's need.

They can cost about $6,000 or more each

What's up ?...Who has advised Who ??
So contrary to what CDA has shared on their website :

www.diabetes.ca/get-involved/news/public-funding-for-insulin-pumps-...
http://www.diabetes.ca/documents/get-involved/Pump-Report-Nova-Scot...

Nova Scotians with the help of the rest of Canadians, who know , that insulin pumps are very benificial to most type 1's , have a lot of work ahead of them !!!

Don't give up !

I must say, right now I am rather ashamed to be a Nova Scotian! And shouldn't diabetic care centres already be educated? So no increase in funds needed there. Shameful!

I can see, that centers would need to be updated, however I am under the impression , that a lot of RN CDE's have a connection with the Insulin Pump Companies ...they are regularly trained by them .

"McNamara said if he had a choice, he would fund long-lasting insulin rather than pumps because it would be of greater benefit to diabetes patients...."

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/story/2011/12/14/ns-diabe...

Is this true? I thought it was an odd thing to say

I am Nova Scotian and I hate that we are so far behind the rest of the country when it comes to funding for insulin pumps anytime I've talked to someone from another province they are shocked to learn we get no help..Although I got diagnosed at 19 so I don't think I'm actually eligible in any province but thats a whole different story

Interesting reading on the cbc link ...thanks CarlyP ....I thnk as well ,that Mr McNamara does NOT understand the difference between " basal " and " bolus" insulin. Yes , better get your story living with d off to the gent, copy to your MLA and Finance Minister .
I may even write them as well .

Has anyone ever written to their MLA about this issue?
I want to do that but I've never done that and would like to see an example I could work from

lots of reading on facebook , started by my buddy BJ ...some sample letters as well ...BJ also started a discussion on Tu /Canadian group

she posted her FB link

http://www.tudiabetes.org/group/canada/forum/topics/letter-writing-...

and Barb Wagstaff http://www.tudiabetes.org/group/canada/forum/topics/pump-and-sensor...

Hope the links work.... and that I did all this correctly .

Thanks!
I don't have facebook though so I can't see the facebook pages or get access to the sample letters

Carly , please have a look at BJ 's discussion on TU , if FB is not accessable ( sp ??) to you for some sample letters ...in reference to the request in BC : pumps for adults I sent 2 sample letters to our pumpers here in my Community

From the Canadian Diabetes website : http://www.diabetes.ca/get-involved/news/response-to-government-of-...
TuD. Barb Wagstaff posted her view on the main page in a great blog !!!
My Blue OUTRAGE T-shirt , received from Manny earlier this Fall , says it all for me !
Is the NS Government forgetting ??? 1 ) some have insurance through their employer ( could be the Government ??) 2 ) not everyone would want a pump .
