Tom,
I don't know about cost effective management but I can comment in regards to assistance to pump users.
Additional assistance is provided to pump users for the purchase of the pump due to the high cost of the pump itself and the idea that long term it is a cost savings.
The cost savings is the fact that the long term health effects of diabetes is reduced, thus reducing what the government will have to pay for health costs.
Pump users still have to cover the costs of medicine and supplies (which is higher on the pump).
In BC this question gets asked alot due to different "conditions" getting different coverage. For example, if I am a drug addict I can get free syringes, but I have to pay for syringes for diabetes. Under 18 gets pump coverage but over 18 doesn't.....
Comment by Tom on May 1, 2012 at 5:31pm im aware my province (Ontario) is covering costs for the pump and its supplies, ive never used a pump and use syringes with novorapid and lantis while testing with an accucheck compact...ive done this for years while under parents insurance then group benifits. ive recently switched employers and my insurance coverage is coming to an end.
what is the most cost effective way of managing type 1 diabetes in southern ontario without the use of a pump? (trillium, private insurance, cheaper insulin, a mix of the these?)
Why is assistance provided to pump users and not syringe users? (am i wrong in this?)
any help is serioulsly appreciated right now...

Comment by Jeff on April 12, 2012 at 5:47pm does anyone know where or how to get a Cheap/free Onetouch usb interface cable?? please help
Great news BJ thanks for sharing. Now let keep the pressure on BC government.
Comment by BJ on April 12, 2012 at 11:22am I got an email just a few moments ago stating that ALL Albertans with Type 1 will receive INSULIN PUMP FUNDING!!!!! YAY for Alberta!! http://www.votepc.ca/admin/contentx/dpNews/launch.cfm?itemid=2477&r=10187
I am so excited for Albeta. I will continue my fight with the BC government to do the same (and all governments across Canada!!) but with each Province that commits to a program, it makes it harder and harder for other governments not to see the benefit. :)
This was the exact email:
Hello,
I am pleased to let you now that, this morning, Alison
Redford announced that a PC government will ensure that all
Albertans who suffer from Type 1 diabetes will receive
cost-free access to insulin pumps. You can read the news
release here:

Thank you for contacting us.
Sincerely,

Comment by DiabeticWarrior on April 12, 2012 at 8:14am are CGM's and insulin pumps covered by medicare or do we have to assume the full cost?
Our CDE Pharmacist very excited about the FreeStyle InsuLinx Glucometer, for those on MDI ( poor man's pump ) ;he attended an information session in Kamloops this past week ...today he showed me " how the meter works " ...next his clients to see CDE staff at the Clinic and discuss carb ratios, correction bolusses etc. etc. to set up insulin pumps " bolus wizard " equivalent .Maybe someone is willing to start a discussion forum , so that updated information does not easily disappear .
