Nel. I am curious as to why you changed back to NovoRapid. Do you see a difference in how it works for you?

Comment by Howie767 on January 12, 2013 at 2:44pm

Interesting. Apidra now does appear along with NovoRapid in that new document link as you correctly observed. The pharmacy is checking into it. Levemir still requires special approval, but I have got that.

The Canada Group is great for exchanging this kind of information.

Nel. Thanks for answering. It's a little complex. I had no problem getting Apidra with Atlantic Blue Cross. But when I took early retirement, my coverage was down-graded and I'm now using my wife's BCGEU insurance. In the process, I lost the 100% private coverage for Apidra that I previously enjoyed. It's no big issue because NovoRapid works fine for me. I just like Apidra for correcting bad highs with an injection. Plus I do like to have a choice of what equipment, drugs and supplies I use. I'll check with the pharmacy and sanofi to get an update on the status with Pharmacare.

http://www.diabetes.ca/documents/get-involved/BC11.pdf dated April 2011 under heading " Formulary status of diabetes drugs " ...it shows covered
Howie , my record show a purchase of Apidra 30 ml on 01-March -2011 ( as I can see this was my last purchase; back to NovoRapid ) and at that time BC Pharmacare did NOT cover ...PBC covered $ 76.85 , total cost $ 79.95 . Have you called your Pharmacy ??

Does anybody in BC know if and when Apidra will be covered by Pharmacare? I use Levemir as a basal when on a pump break and I had to get special approval for that. But Apidra isn't covered period. I phoned Sanofi a while back and was told they are working on getting Apidra approved in BC. Things sure move slowly in Canada.

Pumps for Albertans !!! Someone was misquoted ?? Insulin pumps do not constantly monitor blood sugar levels ! "Insulin pumps, a small device worn round-the-clock, constantly monitors blood sugar levels, then injects insulin as needed through a small catheter inserted under the skin, said Dr. Ron Sigal, a Calgary endocrinologist."
