Hey lovely people!

Hope you're all great! I'm new to this whole 'TU DIABETES' thang! I am Type 1 Diabetic and have been since 2004.

Just wondering...for the past 5 days or so i've been waking up with sugars 16 and higher - eeek! I have NO idea why?! I am taking the same amount of insulin each night and i'm not eating anything that's outta the usual (i eat pretty healthily!) and i'm exercising etc - so it's reeeeally starting to bug me now!!!! I'm always SO careful with my sugars, so this is doing my head in!!!

I changed my insulin pen last night coz i thought the pen i was using may have been a bit dody (even though the expiry isn't til 2012!) but i used my new pen last night and still woke up with a sugar of 18!!!!!!! SO bad and i'm SO annoyed!!!!

So does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the matter?! I don't feel sick at all, but i know if these high sugars keep persisting, then i'm going to have to take myself off to the Drs and i reeeeeally don't wanna!!!!

Prayer would be SO appreciated guys!

Thanks so much & i look forward to your replies!

Hi Kate,

Hmm... you might be getting sick :) Or on period? Those two always cause a havoc with my sugar. I notice my sugar spikes up a day or two before I feel sick (like with a cold, or flu). Or, the week before period it inches up. Infection will bring it up too.

I'm not a doctor so I can't tell you what to do really. But it might help to keep a very detailed journal for a week. I would write down what time I check, take shots, eat and doses, food items, how I'm feeling, etc. Very detailed. And if you notice a pattern, you can either talk to your doctor about it or make slight changes in your habit?

Sometimes... sugars just have its own mind. I'm in such a time too, stress related. Oh ya, stress makes it worse too :P

Anyway, will keep you in prayer!

Chiara
Hi Kate! I agree with Chiara -- these are the two reasons that I usually get highs, but these are very high numbers -- so I think that you need to call your doctor. Something has certainly changed about your insulin needs!

Are you having highs at other times of the day? or only in the morning?

Hormones can really affect insulin resistance. Once I started recording my menstrual cycle in my blood sugar logs, I saw that my insulin needs were higher for days 20-27 after I started my cycle. So you may be facing some insulin resistance related to hormones.

In any case, it's time to call your doctor!
Welcome! I know exactly what is going on! I do that when I have an infection - you might not think you feel really sick - it could be a water infection or a small scratch on your leg or something! What you need to do is to take a wee sample to the doctors - I know you do not want to but it is vital that you do it soonest before it gets any worse! Believe me you do not want to go into ketoacidosis! I have been there 3 times since I have been diagnosed - same as you - 2004!

Meanwhile, ring your DN but I think she will tell you to increase your base dose of insulin by 1 unit for every 3 that you are over the normal. I was told this with both human insulin and now pork, though you do not say which you are on. Does it go down during the day at all? Or you might have to increase your night time dose if you are on one.

Don't worry, these blips happen and as long as you keep drinking lots of water and keep testing and get yourself to the doctors for antibiotics (and something for thrush as antibiotics cause that, as does high blood sugar levels) it will pass.

Am praying for you.

Let us know how you get on!
Hey Everyone!

Thanks so much for all your replies / suggestions - totally appreciate them!

I called my Diabetic Educator today and she said that it sounds like the classic 'REBOUND' symptom. EG: i have a low at midnight/2am in the morning, so i go super low, then it rebounds and goes super HIGH! She said '18' is a classic number for a morning reading if i have rebounded during the night.

In the past few months i have also lost 10kg (yay!) so she asked me if i had adjusted my insulin accordingly - and i HADN'T!!!! She said that because i'm now 10kg lighter, i don't need AS much insulin as i had when i was 10kg HEAVIER!! It aaaaaall makes perfect sense to me now!! Don't know WHY i didn't think of it??!

So she said to adjust my night time insulin a few units and see what happens. I'm to monitor it over the weekend and see how it goes. If my sugars are still quite high next week, then i'm to book in to go see my GP. But i am totally believing they will be back to normal in JESUS' NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!

So - i'll keep y'all posted!!!!

Thanks again everyone!

Bless ya!

Hope that solves it! I have heard about this rebound effect (I think it is also called Somogyi effect), but never really experienced it. I feel like it only happens is I overtreat the low.
