For users of a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring ("CGM") device

Just as a reminder with the recent release of the new Dexcom G4 to the US market--it is NOT okay to post about previous models or older sensors as being 'for sale' on this site.

It is a violation of the Terms of Use because it is a prescription device, and any such efforts will unfortunately be removed.

We encourage you to donate supplies to non-profits such as the Charles Ray III Diabetes Association (http://www.cr3diabetes.org), which accepts unexpired glucometer and insulin pump supplies, or alternatively you may talk to your physician's office or other local medical group to discuss donating them to those in need of assistance.

Thank you all for kindly refraining from this activity.

I restarted the sensor after 7 days. Will it keep working for another 7 days? Or will it stop on its own or will I want to put a new one on soon because it will get irritated. I read people keep it on for 10 days, but why do they stop at 10 days

twice a day is the recommended, and I believe if you calibrate it MORE it may actually start to diminish the efficacy of the unit(?) I just calibrated once in the morning and just before bed at pm. Dex does say that when under certain circumstances ie acetaminaphin use and subsequent meter error you should calibrate again.

I am switching from the minimed CGM to the Dexcom 7 plus. How often can I calibrate the dexcom sensor? I know the minimed sensor worked best when it was calibrated only 3-4 times a day.

Reply to DW's comment, June 9 2010:

It's possible, maybe even LIKELY, that the adhesive failure is the cause of the Sensor failure at 10 days. Once the wire starts getting pulled or pushed around in your skin, the Sensor will become unreliable. (It needs to be kept totally motionless, at a microscopic level.) Maybe you can get more days, if that's important to you.

As long as you don't actually remove the sensor from you body you can restart it anytime you want. The transmitter can come out and be replaced (although this is harder to do while on the body but certainly not impossible. You may want to talk to those doing the surgery though, having a real-time check on where your blood sugars are may be something they'd appreciate. (of course given the vast amount of different medical knowledge they may not have a clue what to do with the info and may or may not accept written directions from you).

Just got the call from my Dexcom rep, insurance approved! Just waiting for some more paperwork from my endo so the rep can proceed.

In terms of sensor readings, from the many users I have compared notes with, and my experience, if a sensor is good, it will be good for up to about 10 days...usually the adhesive begins to wear for me, but this coincides with sometimes having skipped readings, or missed info, so I assume it's time to change. I calibrate 2-3 x/day (which is how much I test with a BG meter), and fly off the Dexcom.
