Still pretty new at this T1 thing. I enjoy beer, but haven't had more than one in the past month. I feel (right now) that it's too dangerous right now until I learn what my body is comfortable with. I suppose I won't be enjoying a beer on the patio this summer. I really do miss it!

Hi Jason. Love the cafe idea BTW. Yeah, heavier beers are more problematic for me too. I can do fine with a pilsner or lager. Some IPAs work fine as well, but I have to be more careful for stouts, porters and darker ales. I really have not experimented enough to give you much insight for dealing with this yet. I know that one beer after work seems to not be a big issue, but if I have two I need to bolus for sure. Kinda sucks since beer is a food group. But for now I can enjoy what I can.

Hi Chance. Welcome to TuD. The most common reason for the over night BG rise is your liver dumping glucose. There are other causes though. Post this in the forums with some more detail (basal, bolus and meal times) and you will get a larger response than on a group post. Lots of folks here with great knowledge and experience. They can give great advice and ideas on how to deal with virtually any issue. It's been a huge help to me over the last year.Enjoy, learn and keep "hoppy".

Has anyone had BG readings go up from kiltlifter( red Scottish ale)? Found it made me go up quite a bit.

Love beer.......one or two a week. My doc says it raises triglycerides, so I drink it occasionally and no other alcoholic beverages. I won't drink that light beer stuff. Ugh! My bloodwork is fine, even my A1C is good.

If the definition of "alcoholic" is "one who often drinks more than they intend", then I am an alcoholic.
That doesn't scare me though, if my courses in Anthropology at the University of Waterloo taught me one thing, it is that much of what I hear about alcohol use and abuse is mythology. I don't listen to scare stories anymore, I just use my meter to tell me if I am at risk.
The problem, of course is that once I've had a few it is difficult to take a reading, so I try to plan in advance what I readings are likely to be. Get BG reading low, then have a beer before the whiskey, This is not recommended for all....it works, more or less, for me.

What I enjoy about drinking beer is that while the carbohydrates will raise blood sugar, about 8 hours later the alcohol may reduce blood sugar. I've had no side effect from drinking moderate amounts of beer — no more than 2 12oz servings in a day.
