TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

So...I think everyone mostly agrees that the carb part of beer raises BG and the alcohol part of the beer lowers BG. So, in theory, there could be a perfect balance between these two and you wouldnt need any insulin for the beer. Has anyone found that perfect beer? Just Curious

(for me, the "perfect drink" is a strong vodka tonic, with non-diet tonic water)

the perfect beer would have to be cold and wet.... thats about the restrictions.... im not fussy:)

Yes I have. I have been homebrewing for about 20 years. As a result I have several styles of beer hanging around the house. Depending on my mood I can usualy find what I want....I usualy tend to go for the Oatmeal Stout.

...any of the light beers (e.g. Corona, Miller, etc.) have little impact on my BS.

Regarding the alcohol yo-yo, hard liquor is not a bad as wine - but I avoid either. I use to be a Jack Daniels man - now, if I'm not having a full-bodied beer with the meal, I *may* have an occasional rum liquor, grasshopper, or mud slide as a dessert. The pump and frequent BS tests helps to keep me on track! :-)

Busch Light seems to work real well with me no affect low or high.
Next on the favorite list would be Sam Adams light better taste but raise's bg slightly.
A treat would be for me to have a Sam's Summer Ale but that definitely raise's the bg.

Beer is one thing that doesn't raise my BG . Dark beers, stout, and porters are high in anti-oxidents. Beer also is high in chromium .,more in unfiltered.... Which is helpful for diabetes. I usally drink mine at room temp. I perfer Porters.

Not sure about perfect. What works for me is to limit the quantity. I don't drink a six pack. If I am having beer I will have one 12oz bottle of something wonderful. Then STOP.

In my case most of the time the lower BS effect of the alcohol comes way later than the BS raise right after drinking so most of the time I use insulin first and at the end of the night eat slow carbs to for a stable BS, of course stable is relative...

I don't have my own perfect beer, but it's sort of a regional thing to drink Grolsch here... When not drinking more than 1-2 beer an hour, <10 a night keeping a good BS isn't a problem. More than that it becomes harder to estimate and I just measure a lot more.

Id have to agree with the quanity thing. It ties in nicly to the overall "moderation" principle of the "diabetic diet", nothing offlimits, its all about moderation and balance.

So with that being said, having a beer is like an event for me. It has to be: a) In a frozen mug, b) GOOD Beer, typically from a keg, NOT can :) So ill pour it with just the right amount of head, admire the color through the fronzen mug, and then ahhhhhh. :) Savor every drop of that one mug. :)

when i got home from work last night i went straight to the keg-a-rator in my living room and poured a beautiful belgian wheat. then i went upstairs to admire the five gallons of barelywine ale fermenting in my room. good god i love beer. oh and vodka tonics are pure bliss :)

A dietitian once told me (I won't name names here) that if you are going to have more than the occasional one beer with meal, don't bother trying to control your BS with insulin. Just readjust and stabilise your sugars the following day. This works for me. I can't imagine giving up beer......Can you?

You know--I have been digging the Bud Light Lime. No real issue as it has about 8g of CHO. Now... I wont lie. It isnt amazing. It surely isnt Fat Tire--but it works.
