Was always curious as to how the homeless deal with diabetes and for myself just in case. In the present economic situation all diabetics should be prepared to have such a plan in place. I think that Humulin R and N would be the most affordable with the basal bolus approach to cost effective management with a generic meter as well. Dr. Richard Bernstein has spoken about this issue briefly in some of his teleconferences. He advises low Humulin N twice daily to closely mimic Lantus as a basal insulin and then Humulin R 3 times daily with meals. He has has used this advice for certain practitioners who serve this population. I'm considering giving this approach a try out of curiosity.
