Along with having Type I diabetes, I also have otosclerosis (hearing loss) as well as polycystic ovarin disease. My hearing loss is not significant enough for surgery...yet. I hope it does not decrease any more. The ovarian thing....it's not a big deal b/c I just don't have cycles as frequently as the normal person. Hopefully that's it for a while! :)

Here is part of an article I wrote on Diabetes and Thyroid Disease. It might help explain some of your BG issues.

If the thyroid gland becomes under active the production of thyroid hormone is decreased, hypothyroidism results and metabolism slows down. As hypothyroidism develops, you may notice that your blood glucose levels are lower than usual. This is caused by the slow down of your body’s metabolism. Because of this slow down the metabolism of medication slows and the medication stays active in the body longer. It often becomes necessary to decrease the amount of medication taken to prevent hypoglycemia. Once a person with hypothyroidism receives thyroid hormone therapy, thyroid levels return to normal as does diabetes medication requirements.

Conversely, if the thyroid gland becomes overactive, production of thyroid hormone is increased and the result is an increase in metabolism known as hyperthyroidism. As hyperthyroidism develops metabolism increases and medications are metabolized from the body more quickly resulting in a rise in blood glucose levels. Hyperthyroidism and low blood glucose (hypoglycemia) can be hard to tell apart. If you are sweating and having tremors from hyperthyroidism, you may think you have low blood glucose and eat extra food, causing your blood glucose to rise. Testing to identify the problem will prevent unnecessarily treating a low blood glucose level which would cause a subsequent rise in blood glucose level. Insulin doses may need to be increased to control the rising blood glucose levels. Once hyperthyroidism is treated, hypothyroidism usually follows. Once the thyroid is brought back to normal, blood glucose levels also return to normal and so does insulin requirements.

There's something going on (again)...in addition to the existing list!
1. Perpetual tremors in pinkie and frequently of thumb in left hand.(Going for a stress test for that)
2. Adverse reaction to certain foods (or so it seems)...will be tested for that also.

I have arthritis in both of my knees and shoulders. Although it might not be considered another malady, it does keep me from the kind of life I'd like to live. I learn to do what I can on good days, and take it easy on bad days. Yet, I have to believe that dealing with the pain does cause stress and ups my BS's. It stinks and I know there are others who have it worse than I, but it still stinks~

I started thyroid meds at the end of January and . yes, the BG readings went up and have up. Apparently it is one of the side effects of the stuff. And they all do it as all the brands are basically the same. I asked the pharmacist. For more info try the web site ThyroidDiseaseChatCenter.com. I found them to be a great help. Carol

so just started thyroid meds--anyone had them make the BG go up? if so--is it temporary while your body adjusts?

I have auto immune hypothyroidism and it sucks. Thyroid is a waaaayyyyy harder disease to have than diabetes in my opinion. Theres so much to learn about thyroid disease and no regular doctors can manage your thyroid disease because they have no idea what they are doing. They put people on Synthroid and Levoxyl and check your TSH and say your normal even though you feel like crap.

Hi I'm Tracy I have a husband and two sons with type 1 my youngest son on the day he was dx was also dx with hypothyroidism. He is two and we have noticed that it has delayed him some in his speech. I didnt relize it was such a common thing to have both at one time.

Im so sorry to hear of your son's concerns (and yours), what a nightmare....you never what waiting for you around the corner. My heart goes out to you. Aside from medical advice, it's so very important to keep in touch with a support group....if only to get it off your chest. Is your son connected with a support team/friends/this site? I can only imagine what he must be going through! All the best, Scream....I can well see why you've picked THAT painting. Do keep in touch.
