With all of the varied groups on tudiabetes.org, I was surprised not to find one regarding diabetes and vitiligo. I have had Type 1 diabetes for 29+ years, and after about the first 15, found white…Continue

I am not so concerned cosmetically, I sorta like the patches, funny. Makes me unique and unusual. However, what is the cause, the root of the condition? As puzzling as type 1 diabetes.

About 6 months ago, itchy patches on abdomen, would come and go, redness and itchy. Now, white patches, with red circles. Started on left side abdomen lateral above navel. Also showing on right side. Spots on hands also reappearing.

Hello,
I am female type 1, for 29 years. This discussion on vitilgo and diabetes is what brought me to the forum. 3 years ago, white patches around my eyes, then in my arm pits, and I noticed tears, and arm pits sweating, lots of tears and arm pit sweating... and this fluid looks like insulin. So I googled this, diabetes and type 1 diabetes. Autoimmune. 30% of type 1 have vitiligo. Last year, dime size spots on back of hands, all patches and spots are bilateral. I got some tincture from my Chinese teacher last year for my hands, spots went away almost completely

Hi Sue - I did try some cream on my hands many years ago but discontinued as it did not blend well and had a fragrance that didn't agree with me.
I have just today received an email from a friend re topical steroid therapy. The article is too long to put here on this site but I will happily forward to anyone interested if you provide email address - or if I can sent through messaging system here.

Nissen. Thanks for the post! Did you ever explore getting treatment for it? Mine first appeared on my hands and elbows, but has progressed to my hips. I am very fair skinned, so it is more of a 'public' issue in the summer time when the rest of your skin darkens and the patches do not..or worse yet..get sun burned! Interesting you have Type 2...I wonder if they are related or not. Supposedly Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease common with Type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.

I am a 66 year-old male, diagnosed with Type 2 in Aug'09. I have had 'lip-tip' vitiligo, affecting hands, feet, lips. . .for about 30 years. . .it hasn't been getting worse, but worth monitoring.
