We're in KY. Thanks for all the info. We have only been dealing with all this for a year & have been pretty involved in seeing regular doctors -- Sam was in a clinical trial for a year, plus all the other visits to endocrinologist, dermatologist, ophthalmologist, etc. When we have a break we can check other options!
Dear Sam's Mom and Sam, You are in my heart. Thank you for sharing more info. I was diagnosed with NLD on my shins at age 15, I also used steroid cream and it did nothing to help my condition. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have greatly benefited. NLD lession on my right shin is gone, also had NLD on right breast, completely gone. The NLD on left shin is still present, yet much improved and almost gone. Along with regular acupuncture tx and herbal tx for blood sugar management, I am now receiving tx for vitiligo. Vitiligo showed up about 3 years ago, much worse with sun exposure, and more obvious in the summer time. Last summer I used a special tincture of Chinese herbs topically on my hands, completely disappeared last summer. I could not use this around my eyes though. I worked with Dr. Chen, a dermatology specialist Ph.D, she specialises in skin disorders in Chinese Medicine. She was my teacher for TCM Dermatology while I was in school. I wrote my final paper in derm class on treating vitiligo and type 1 diabetes. I have done much research regarding this, of course because I also suffer this condition. Now, I work with Xiangdong Yu,L.Ac, Ph.D, at Jing River Acupuncture Clinic in Hastings, MN. We will be making the Chinese herbal tincture for topical treatment, and also taking specific Chinese Herbal formulas to treat the root of the condition. I want to specialise in autoimmune disease, and will continue education for my Doctorate. Dr. Yu and I will do further research regarding treatment, as he already has contributed much to research, and he has already contributed much towards research in Western Medicine and TCM, Traditional Chinese medicine for more than 25 years.
Can you share where you live? Have you considered TCM for treatment? Many practitioners also take insurance.
This may not make sense to you, however I will attempt to explain in term of the condition in Chinese Medicine... The itchy of the area indicates Wind in Chinese Medicine, this wind is due to the heat in the blood, also a deficiency heat due to deficiency of Kidney and Liver blood, combined with stagnation of blood. The tx clears the heat, nourishes the Liver and Kidney and moves the blood. I am taking the formula, Rehmannia & Hedyotis Combo, which has 9 herbs in the formula, and comes in a capsule. This formula is specific to my condition, and for Sam it maybe the same, or maybe different. It would be necessary to do a full intake, and consultation to say for sure. However, it sounds very similar. Early tx is best! Also, stress is a trigger. Plenty of rest is necessary. This formula also helps with better sleep, and helps to calm the spirit. There is also specific foods that are beneficial for this condition. Does Sam like Shrimp and Asparagus, this is very good for for this condition. Also gogi berries, you can find at health food stores. They are very tasty and make a nice snack, great to add to oatmeal, I like to add to brown rice and make a congee. Yams, sweet potatoes, and squash are very good to nourish the spleen qi in TCM and are very tonifying for the qi of the body and help to nourish the blood, also give lots of energy to the body, helps young girls this age who are active and also with smooth flow of the menstrual cycle, as Sam is this age to have started her period.
Soon I will be doing a presentation on the tx of Diabetes, and also the complications and accompanying conditions common with T1 and autoimmune disease.
For now I can say, age 15/16 is very challenging age for any young women. Having a mom who loves her and supports her is so important! I hope you are close and enjoy a special bond. I did not have much support from my mom at this age, and it was sad and difficult for me. I felt very confused and alone. I felt bratty and bad tempered too. I remember saying mean things to my mom, but really I wanted her love. Much Love,
Samantha is 15, turning 16 in July. She was diagnosed T1 at 14, in Nov 2010. We noticed the spots on her arms last summer, 2011. Thought it had something to do with tanning. Then I read about the connection between T1 & vitiligo. Just got the diagnosis from a dermatologist in January. She has a steroid cream to rub on the spots. Doesn't seem to be doing anything. Samantha also has Hashimoto's thyroiditis. 3 autoimmune attacks, so we hope that's it!
Awesome, I should go to China for Tx. Oh, oops, I forgot, I am a Chinese Doctor, Licensed Acupuncturist, L.Ac, Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, MAOM, and I work for/with Doctor from China. I am getting Traditional Chinese Medicine Tx for (vitiligo) - In TCM, it is not one size fits all,,, I am VERY interested in the link between type 1 diabetes, and vitiligo. Also, the Dx and Tx in Chinese Medicine for Diabetes, and all its 'types'. I am interested in eliminating the cause, and regeneration of cells. I am interested in treatment on a curative level, not a management of symptoms.
And, the white circles around my eyes, do bother me, I look like an owl, and feel like a legendary omen of death. I have been in several comas, and clinically dead. I feel I have come back, to be, simply being, I am the Cure I have been waiting for.
I don't like my picture taken either. :)
Hugs to Sam, and SamsMom. Please can you tell me more? Sams age? Diabetes? What age was onset of D? When did vitiligo appear? Thank you so much for sharing.

My daughter has vitiligo on her upper arms & these spots appeared a little red & rashy before they calmed down & appear as just "white" areas compared to her usual tan. (We're at a softball tournament in Florida & she just mentioned to me that someone took a photo of her & she didn't like the way her arms looked).
Marie B, Have you ever had any itchy at areas of vitiligo patches or spots, before or after the spots/patches appeared?
Also, have you ever had lesions on your shins, NLD (necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum)?
I got my vitiligo a year before my dx of type 1 in 1967. I've been pumping now since 1990, and don't have any vitiligo where I put my infusion sets.
Thank you, I want to have more discussion.
My father also has vitiligo, he does not have diabetes. So also genetic.
