blood sugars and periods...
hey everyone,
I'm new to this website... im 19 years old and ive had type 1 diabetes since i was 8... is it normal for your blood sugars to get a little out a wack wen your on your period?

Absolutely! Mine go NUTS before my period and level out when it arrives.

Yes, lots of women find they're higher just before and lower during due to hormones. It helps to chart your cycle and watch for trends.

Yes...I'm an old geezer into menopause (thank-God) but I still remember the horrible insulin resistance I'd have to work thru each month the 4-5 days before my cycle started. My pump nurse suggested I bump up the basal rates by 10-15% for those days and that did help some and also kept me from stacking insulin which happened when I tried to bolus my way out of rising blood sugars. You may need to adjust the basal rates up each day as you approach the start of your period so charting your cycle as previously suggested is important and extra BS testing is needed during that pre-period week. Yes, I've been trying to figure mine out for about a year now. I think that I need about 1 and a half times as much insulin in days 20-27 of my cycle (with day 1 being the first day of my period), but it seems that those days are unpredictable. Last month 150% seemed like enough, this month I needed twice my normal doses. Once my period starts things are A-OK. It actually makes me look forward to it ;)
Before I started charting my cycle and my blood sugars together, I think that I just always had "unexplainable highs" on these days.
My endo has me write which day of the cycle I am on right in my blood sugar logs. Try to watch for patterns. -

My blood sugars get extremely high for all 5 days of my period (and sometimes a day after) My endo. told me that this is perfectly normal and not to worry about it. It is just hormones that cause your body to act out.
