I am expecting to start menstruating today. When I went to bed, my blood sugar was around 160 mg/dl (8.9 mmol/L). I corrected, but woke up this morning with the same blood sugar. I thought it was strange that it didn't drop so I decided to check for ketones.

I was surprised that I tested for large ketones (>80 mg/dl).

I am on an insulin pump -- so I immediately changed my infusion set and gave a correction injection. Nothing appeared to be wrong with my infusion set. Now I'm trying to figure out why I might have such large ketones and not such high blood sugars.

Does anyone know whether starting menstruation can cause ketones?

Now just a few hours later, I tested negative for ketones. Perhaps the large bolus and change of infusion set was the solution?

Still puzzled why my blood sugar wasn't higher if I was truly insulin deficient.
Your BG might have spiked over night and you were coming down when you checked in the am. A correction bolus and being up and around maybe got rid of the rest of the ketones. Never heard about a connection between ketones and a period. I've had them a few times while not very high around 250 bg and I was told it was because I'm very thin. Who knows?
Thanks Christine!
I wonder if you just had ketones because you hadn't eaten for several hours? I read a blog entry from someone worried about their baby getting T1, and overnight her baby developed ketones (she tested in the morning), but had fasting BG of only 78.
