Inspired by the "Trader Joe's Junkies - whats on your list?" discussion

We thought about creating a database of the healthy food choices one can do while shopping on some of national supermarket chains. And why not the your local Farmer's Market

SOME TIPS...

* Take into account foods that give you good results at managing your diabetes.
* If it is an high carb / high fat item, please share with us your secret to keep your blood sugar levels under control :)
* It there is a product you know it has been difficult to consume while keeping good control (even if you bolus following the tag) listed at the end of your list as NOT RECOMENDED alt the end, or something like that.

This could help a lot us us while we keep having fun: :)

BJ's called Straws in the chip aisle...low fat, low carb...Olivia loves them...they look like French fries....38 straws for only 15 carbs! Great when she gets the juncture...

I made a vegan shitake walnut pate and a terrible shitake miso soup and am now officially sick of shitakes but have a lot left. Any ideas from the peanut gallery? Does anything freeze well or should I just freeze the reat and try to add them to a vegetable broth one day? This is what I get for mixing up 1 cup with 1 pound. One pound is a lot of shitakes.

JeffD; When I saw your rabbit, I couldn't help but send you this: What do you call an anaethstitized rabbit? Give up? AN ETHER BUNNY! lol

Lately I have been remembering recipes wrong and buying too much produce. Example: I thought one cup of shitake mushrooms was one pound of shitake mushrooms. Now I will have to make a lot of mushroom recipes. To top it all off, the "marvelous" mushroom soup for which the shitakes were purchased for turned out to be a terrible, boring recipe. Next I will try the mushroom walnut vegan pate, stuffed mushrooms and m,ake another batch of not diabetic friendly soba noodle soup. Green beans were the last item I over purchased. Stir fry one day, garlicky green beans the next. But this is slowing down my attempt of cooking through my cookbook. I am more than half way through the 200 recipes.

Its easy. I buy a box of cold cereal, sugar frosted flakes or frosted minnie wheats or something. I take it home, dump out the contents and eat the box.

If you are trying to save some dough right now, there are some healthy items you can buy from Costco. I found they have Dex glucose tablets, which are the best tasting glucose tablets. Still not totally delish but better than the rest. Also I recently purchased a box of organic canned tomatoes, a box of canned kidney beans, a jar of sun dried tomatoes, a box of Pellegrino mineral water and a large bag of pine nuts. These all work well for cooking the types of food I like to make. I guess this should go under Costco replies. Orbit gum also is good purchase there because it keeps your teeth a little cleaner between times when you can brush. I am going to check on other tudiabetes members finds at Costco. I do also shop a lot at Trader Joe's, Ralphs and Whole Foods. But Trader Joe's has discontinued two of my favs there.

We are going to Farmers Market a lot lately...

I found out to my surprise when we moved to California that Trader Joes is not as expensive as Whole Foods... actually, many times things are cheaper than in Safeway or Publix.

It appears a lot of people go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Some of my co-workers talk about these markets. They say the markets are good but pricey and organic. I do try to hit the Farmers Market in Howell, MI....cheap but good and a way to help the locals!
