Diabetes Australia: Diabetes Australia is a national federated body made up of state and territory organisations supporting people with diabetes.
Insulin For Life: Insulin for Life Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that collects and distributes insulin and other diabetes supplies that would otherwise be wasted. These are donated to recognised organisations in many countries, with agreed monitoring systems, on an ongoing, sustainable basis, and following emergencies.

Alan, I have to smile, I found a booklet from Diabetes WA in my mail box today, entitled 'Healthy Eating'. WA has adopted the ADA 'plate' and it advises a good grainy carby diet such as is probably ok for healthy non diabetic people. Maybe you will get one of these books from DiabetesQld.

First I'd have to re-join; I quit way back when i rote that letter.

I'm also in NSW, not Qld, just south of the border :)

Well I'll be darned - I've been on many forums overseas for years, including sporadic visits to TuDiabetes - and never knew this section existed. Sue sent me over.

Over the past nine years I tried several times to get involved with a local forums. Reality check was good (I notice it now looks a bit commercial) but I was a bit too old for most there when I dropped in many years ago. Diabetes Counselling online wasn't happy with some of my comments (not alone there, I tell it a bit straight for some) and MyDiabetes didn't last.

So I hope there's a few Aussies here who know how to read meters in mmol and what the NDSS is :)

Comment by Brent on July 10, 2011 at 4:46pm: Hey Susi, I too completely agree with you. I am just hoping it will open their eyes a little though. When the artificial pancreas is released, no one will be able to afford it. Like you, I rather them on PHI and then they push the government. I have left room in the petition I think asking them to at least push to cover them on PHI. I can only try once again. If it goes nowhere then we stay as we are. There is a high possibility this will go nowhere but at least I can say I tried.

The company distributing the Dexcom here said they have not heard anything back from their people but hope to have good news by the end of the year. They are ready to launch it here since they have TGA approval. They're just waiting on something else.

At this point I'd be pleased enough to see private health insurance fund CGMs (if the Dexcom 7+ ever gets here) and the sensors. Then let those big business private health insurance fight for the government to fund both pumps and CGM - they can throw much more weight at it than we can.

Even if we have relatively high rates of T1 here (22 per 100,000 population in 2006), there's still not enough of us. I signed a similar petition organised by the T1D network or maybe someone on Reality Check, a couple of years ago, and nothing came of it. But I will definitely sign again.

We are currently fighting for pumps to be funded by the government similar to the NHS in the UK and for sensors to be put onto the NDSS for cheaper access for everyone. Everyone deserves access to better treatments if they want to and pumps and CGM technology do that. Why should we be left behind?

Comment by J. Davis Harte on April 22, 2011 at 3:03pm: G'day everyone! My family has been in Sydney for more than a month now and boy! have my bg's been a bit erratic since arriving. Between extra walking (love it) and eating on the run, I've been swinging from lots of lows to extreme highs. We'll be settling into our new house after the Easter holiday and I'll be glad for a little more consistency and a better-equipped kitchen.

Anyone recommend good GP's in Sydney Inner West? We'll be living in Zetland. Can I hope that some GP's have some modern knowledge of living with diabetes?
