Yes, it does make the diabetic drugs less necessary so there is a danger of over dosage on those drugs, so it takes experience.
I use a very inexpensive brand and I do not know whether I should mention brands. You possibly can find it in a pharamacy as my experience is they do sell the least expensive ones and therefore not the best. I feel certain you will find it there, but as there are so many supplements in the world a pharmacy will not have a lot. A health store has far more.
Now I see a reason to buy a book that lists supplements cross referenced to drugs. I thought about it before, but I don't take any drugs other than insulin which is technically also a drug as it is molecularly different from real insulin.
That book you mentioned is well worth reading, but it is not Dr Bernstein's which is entitled "Diabetes Solution" which is likely cheaper on Amazon.CA but here is his page that describes his 4th edition =don't get any earlier ones, as he just updates them and you want the latest of course. Reading books is an excellent way to get all the information as doctors can't teach everything in short visits.
I wish all endocrinologists would read Dr Bernstein's book, but sadly they don't.
Comment by KathyL on February 2, 2013 at 5:13pm Hi Janina,
No, I don't currently take any supplements. I will look for chromium GTF. Can I find that in a regular pharmacy? And it doesn't cause any negative reactions with the other meds I'm on? I've seen Dr. Bernstein mentioned in a few of the forums here, but haven't seen the name of the book he wrote. It's not the Think Like a Pancreas book is it?
I would suggest Dr Bernstein's book and the group as he mentions splitting doses a lot and even at the same time.
Also chromium GTF will reduce insulin resistance. Do you take supplements?
Comment by Terrie on January 31, 2013 at 9:20pm Good to meet you Kathy. There are many Great People here. If you can't find your answers in search at the top or in the Type 2 groups then you can ask your questions on the main page or write a blog nearer to the bottom of the main pag, if you like. Feel free to "add as a Friend" to anyone who appeals to you or whom you would like to make a specific comment to or ask something of.
Yes, Metformin bothers many People unfortunately but as you say, it does work well. Yes, I can imagine that Insulin Resistance and particularly extreme I.R. can be a real nightmare. Has your GP mentioned splitting your Levemir to use twice a day? Many Levemir users have found that it does not last the full 24 hours, so we split it to cover all hours. Ask around, if you haven't already.
Comment by KathyL on January 31, 2013 at 12:58pm Thanks for the warm welcome Terrie! Sounds like you have a great group here! I look forward to getting to know all of you. Yes, I am on Januvia as well as Levemir and Humulin R. I can't take Metformin unfortunately, as I've heard that would help move my numbers faster, but I have a bad reaction to it. I was originally dxd in 2001, did diet and exercise until the numbers started creeping in 2011 and then the process started of finding something that worked. According to my GP, I have extreme insulin resistance, so insulin now my lifelong friend I think. I have been to Banting House a few times, although all before my diagnosis, so I think a trip now would have new significance!
Comment by Terrie on January 30, 2013 at 8:30pm Oh and each of us went to the Banting Museum in London in August also. I'm sure you have been there. :D I really enjoyed being in the building where Banting was. You have a wonderful city there.
Comment by Terrie on January 30, 2013 at 8:25pm Hi Kathy...Welcome to Tud and the Ontario and Canada sites.
Yes, it takes most people some time to get their Insulin doseage correct...then it goes and needs to be changed for whatever reason. When were you dxd? I'm a Type 1 and was dxd. in 1961.
Too bad you weren't on this site last August. Nel(from BC), Linda G, myself and our spouses all met up in Kitchener at a restaurant. We had a Great time. :D We were pleased to meet them all. Nel and Linda look young for their age. :oP
Anyways, many Type 2's here to chat with and learn from. I think it is good for you to be using Insulin but I thought some Type 2's use pills along with it? I could be wrong. Won't be the first time. :) Take Care!!
Comment by KathyL on January 30, 2013 at 4:39pm Hi everyone,
I'm brand new to this site, and happy to see so many Canadians and Ontarians on here! I look forward to meeting some of you, and hopefully gaining some of your knowledge. I am T2, recently started insulin after pills didn't work, and increasing in insulin units daily trying to find that magic number...seems like it's taking forever!!! Anyway, look forward to chatting with you!
