I've been a Type 1 for 37 years and a year ago diagnosed with CKD, Stage 3. I've limited fluids, protein (I'm a carnivore!), and now tomatoes, coffee, potatoes, peanut butter & bananas :( because of too high potassium. I'm beginning a clinical trial for a new CKD medication and qualify even though I'm a T1 (diagnosed at age 31). Anyone else doing this trial - sponsored by Reata Pharmaceutical Company?

hey ann, lorri, debe. how are ya all? lets get caught up on this site. how is twin sister doing? how is husband doing? etc. i know my connection with other amputees (support groups, etc) is what got me thru. i got the courage to drive after 6 months of needless fear, because of my double amputee friend telling me what a chicken i was. my grandson talan came home from school one day & i was in the drivers seat. i said get in. he said where are we going? i said around the block. he said whos driving? i said i am. he said im outta here & got ready to bale. but awesome kid that he is, he shut the door & put on his seat belt having total trust in his nanny. we were just fine. we leave this week to drive to grand canyon - just me & him & a regular car. i drove it last year (2100 miles) w/ my friend but i drove cuz she was a really bad driver (w/ 2 legs!). so i hope all of you are grabbing your boot straps & getting on w/ life. all things are possible - getting the right attitude is the hard part. ive been feeling real low for 4 days. i got on here, read the comments, started typing & finally re-attituded myself. thank you guys. butterflies & rainbows to all!!

Ann, Just always let her know you are there for her. My mother are so close now, she is just not my mother she is my best friend. Its now been 2 years of rehab for numberous complications and my cousins and friends are still here but not like they use to be. Something always comes up when I get feeling down or blue, ut they always tell me a phone call away, but never seem to find the time like before. So just let her know you are here for her and sometimes give her a little self confidence. I to have had all my pride taken away from me when I am learning how to walk all over again and doing things I took everyday for granted. But my mother all has time for me know matter how busy she is. I hope that helps.........((HUGS)) Debe

Hi!
I am new to this group.
My twin sister had a below the knee amputation Sept.2008. May 2008 she started with an ulcer the size of a pin head. Had 2 angioplasty surgeries and the complications came 1 after the other. She entered the hospital May 2008 and just got out of one of the many hospitals, rehabs, acute cute hospitals last Friday.
In the 9 months she was home for about 2 weeks.
I am so heartbroken! She is so corageous and never asks why me?
Any comments for a care giver? I also have been her advocate. Dealt with numerous road blocks: Dr.s, health insurance, getting various medical needs approved etc.
How best can I help my sister?
Thanks
Ann

Why I was not with you?????? I saw some of my friends here! So hello to everyone, I'm type 1 since 1967, and I had some complications: retinopathy (lazer, and now my right eye has oedema near the macula) and an open heart surgery in 2003, a frozen shoulder . I hope you are all well.

Susie, I would follow up with a dietitian to follow a renal diet. Maybe lower your sodium and cut your protein down also. Thats some of the stuff I was watching in the beginning...Keep in touch......

According to my Doctor I am starting to have problems with my kidneys. I am scheduled for a bunch of labs. I am having different issues but I am not sure they are related to that. Do you have any suggestions of how I can protect them better and things to watch for?
Thanks

I too lost my leg 10 yrs ago. I had dialysis for 3 years and 24 days . I had a transplant in 2007 and doing well. I still have a few problems. I love life and thank God I am doing well. You could live a normal life with diabetes. I'm a SURVIVOR...
