Diabetics for Universal Healthcare!

The U.S healthcare system is a problem for a lot of people, including diabetics. If you support universal (single payer) healthcare, join this group! Especially since the ADA and JDRF don't seem to have anything to say on this important issue.

Hi everyone!

Just in time for WDD the Diabetes Wellness Fund is launched. It is a program that supplies low-income/ uninsured diabetics with testing supplies. You can read about it at www.coalitionclinics.org. Once at that home page go to the bottom right corner and click on the red heart. I'd like some feedback if youcould reply; it would mean a lot to me. Thanks and happy weekend, Virgil

He's Back! What a great speech, lets hope we can get this done in some form or another at last...

Here's a great link to Obama's Health Care Action center, which includes links and suggestions for how to get involved. Pass it on! We have to keep the pressure on and let our congresspeople know we mean business!

oops - I mean to say we so have a "partially-government run system"!
Dan W. Comment by Dan W. on March 13, 2009 at 8:45am
I agree with Elaine's main points - we do have already have a government run system, which actually functions fairly well (just ask your congresspeople how they like their insurance). The question for those who advocate a "free-market" fix has got to be, how could it get worse? Those without any insurance do get care, at the point of an emergency at 10x the cost, with with lesser quality. The other question for free market advocates I would ask is whether mandating coverage for all, regardless of pre-disposition, is too much of an "infringement" on the free-market system? and how would the industry carry out such a mandate?

Right now we have an insurance- and government insurance-controlled system, so a "government" system couldn't be worse, especially considering that 6% of the 16% of the GDP spent on health care is spent by insurance companies weeding out the sick from their ranks of covered folks. We spent more (per person) on health care than any other country, yet we rank 38th in health outcomes. That means we can learn something from the 37 other countries who have a healthier population. Fear is the enemy of change, as always. We resist the unfamiliar.
However, it may be more expedient to require insurance coverage of everyone, but have the chronically ill (e.g., us) n covered by government insurance. Right now, you can only qualify for government insurance if you make 1/2 the poverty rate. At least that's it in GA. And disability is almost impossible to make. I could not qualify for SS disability (not that I'd want to), because my previous employer (a public school system) opted out of the SS network.
Plus, we don't use resources well in our current system. I remember getting a spot of ringworm when I was in college, and a doctor saw me, made a slide and looked at it under a microscope in diagnose and prescribe treatment. Please. You know that a nurse or a physician's assistant could have diagnosed that in no time. That was wasted money. Frankly, fewer specialists and more visiting nurses would make our population a lot more healthy. I taught so many children whose illnesses went untreated because "I have to wait until my insurance kicks in", etc. We need a public health perspective in this country. I truly believe that half the educational problems in schools would be solved w/ adequate universal health care.

I totally agree with two things here. I do believe that a government controlled health care system would make our healthcare problems worse. We would all sit in emergency rooms for hours and hours waiting for care while many died. But a non-profit insurance system would be worth looking into. The doctor and patient should have a voice in the proper testing and care for each condition. There has got to be another way besides punishing people for being sick.

Hi Kenneth!! Thanks for your comment! You brought up our favorite topic! I decided to start a new discussion for replies. I would be curious to hear more about how you imagine a free market fix to the US health care system! For me, it's hard to imagine how to fix it without huge government intervention!!
Kenneth Jacobson Comment by Kenneth Jacobson on February 26, 2009 at 4:09pm
I do believe that the current U.S. healthcare system is in bad shape. However, I believe that Universal healthcare will only make the problem worse. We should be heading into a Free Market fix rather than a big government fix.

Lets keep up the pressure on the new Prez - a health care fix as part of the economic stimulus...
