TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Hello all---I,ve not contributed anything for awhile, but am still running, and running pretty well. On March 1 I ran the Napa Valley Marathon, and had a really good day. Woke up with BG at 110, ate nothing, and at the start of the race it was 150, which is my goal for long distance. I test every two miles or so, and it stayed near 150 through mile 10---all I was putting in my mouth was water.. And I felt great---I started thinking I might go all the way w/o eating anything (unheard of for me)---then thought again and realized I didn;t have the energy reserves to go 26 w/o eating anything, so I took 15% of one unit of Humalog (yes, no pump). This insulin allowed me to switch from water to gatorade at the aid stations, and I ate a couple whole wheat fig bars and sucked down a little white sugar between mile 10 and 22. At mile 22, my BG was 180 and I still felt great---that was my last test. I was at 51 when I finished, which surprised me, but I felt good at the end. It did rain all the way, but temp was in the forties and low fifties, and it was comfortable. I actually felt sorry for the spectators---huddled under umbrellas and ponchos-- there were lots of them at the intersections and their cheering and their ringing cowbells really helped. And a special thank you to the "angel of mercy" with that big bowl of M & M's somewhere near the end... And I took nine minutes off my last marathon. It was just plain fun all the way---a big reward for all the tough training in the cold and the dark, and for all the hypoglycemia, too. I've been really lazy this past week, but feel I've earned a bit of a break. Tomorrow I'm going to go about six or seven and see how I feel. Howard.
