Comment by Jerry Nairn on June 21, 2012 at 11:17pm I agree that it's fun to run the short races. They all have their special challenges and rewards, from the sprints to the ultras.
Good job, Brian. and a late congratulations to Chad.
Comment by Brian on June 21, 2012 at 9:24pm Thanks! It was pretty fun to just push really hard for a short distance. It's a totally different way of running a race. Also, there's a lot less to figure out when it comes to managing BG. Good times!
Comment by acidrock23 on June 21, 2012 at 5:24pm Nice job Brian! Sometimes I think that running shorter races faster might be more fun than marathon? I dunno if I'd be quite that fast though!

Comment by Chad O. on June 17, 2012 at 1:58pm Thanks Dane. My blood sugars were regularly a bit high during training. This was a bit higher than usual but I was pretty revved up and full of adrenaline which really affects everything.
I was using the cliff energy gel shots, not the blocks. I am not a fan of the blocks as I don't like to chew on things while I'm running.
Good luck on your marathon. I will definitely share as much knowledge as I can.

Comment by Chad O. on June 17, 2012 at 12:49pm Hello everyone. I have been a lurker here for a bit as I was preparing for my first marathon but this is my first post. I've used a lot of the tips here (i.e. reducing basal rate, RaceReady running shorts, etc.) for better training. I ran my marathon yesterday. I finished in 4:12:41 and am pretty pleased with my effort. I woke up before the race with a 180 blood sugar. I ate about 1/2 a banana. Shortly before the race I was at 260. I took a small correction and had 1/2 a cliff bar. I stopped to test at 12 miles and was 232 after 1 cliff gel during the run. I had one more gel during the second half and crossed the finish line with a 200 blood sugar. I felt pretty crummy after I was done but improved quickly after eating some more food. I stayed pretty high throughout the day but overall I would say things went okay with my diabetes over the course of everything and I am so happy to have accomplished this. Thank you all for the tips and inspirational messages and congrats to those of you on your running.

Comment by drsoosie on June 9, 2012 at 6:21pm Dane I am sorry you had a yucky training run today. i have been using the honey stingers and they seem to affect me quite quickly. I also carry lifesavers for quick sugar just in case. I had a bad training run today too but mine was because I tried a new route and didn't realize the three miles home were quite an incline. I was going for my 14 today and had to stop at 12. Plus I am having issues with two of my toenails being really bruised. not sure how to solve that problem yet!
