I remember when I first went to dinner at my aunts house after being diagnosed, she was famous for pies, brownies etc. I felt so bad when she announced that there was diet jello for dessert because Wendy can't have regular desserts. After a couple more dinners I convinced my family that they can have dessert without me. She even tries to fix strawberry pies so I can eat them. I don't tell her I just take a little extra insulin when she fixes one. Live and Learn

Officially diagnosed when I was 26 with type 2, later on type 1, after thorough bloodtests type 1,5 or LADA.
No symptoms at all at that time... luckily my wife is a pharmacy tech. who took a BGmeter home just 'for fun' one day...

I cant imagine how that must have felt, as even with all this online support, it can still be/feel isolating. I think the worst part is when you have to 'break it' to a friend, and they begin treating you just like normal, but as soon as you tell them, they feel pity for you, and look at you differently. I'm at that stage now where I'm having to tell people, but it's hard to have to keep repeating my stroy over and over. It's exhausting! But then it's such a big change in my life, that friends around me deserve to know. And I want them too.. I just often forget how Diabetes can be perceived to those who aren't affected with it constantly, on a daily basis. I really am glad to have found somewhere where I can share these thoughts : )

It's amazing how many people are affected by this disease. Back when I was diagnosed I felt very alone, like no one knew what I was going thru and there wasn't the internet or even diet mt. dew. This is a wonderful site.

Hey there, my name's Emma. I'm 22 and was diagnosed 16th July 2010., which just so happened to be the day after my Graduation! Still getting to grips with it all and have had to take some time away from my teacher training to prioritise my health. It's great to find this site : )

gosh 1000 ! that's scary! I'm glad you were smart enough to self-diagnose!

Should have also said that my A1c test was off the charts - they couldn't measure it. When they checked my sugar for the first time it was unreadable by the meter, bloodwork came near 55 mmol ( ~ 1000 mg/dl). Somehow I managed to not have that many keytones... otherwise I could have been in trouble!

I self-diagnosed myself at 23 with symptoms of frequent urination, insatiable thirst, lack of appettite, rapid weight loss, little to no energy and extremely blurry vision (I'm normally better than 20/20, and I could barely see a road sign on the highway.)

I was diagnosed at 19 (in 2003) with T1, no family history and I was really skinny. Only symptoms were thirst and frequent urination. Tried pills for a week but then switched to insulin and pills and have been on the pump for 2 years now!

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Sept 2010 at the age of 23. Its not genetic and even with a HA1C of 11.2 I had ZERO symptoms. It was luck that I was diagnosed during routine blood tests!
