A group for Diabetics with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), giving us an area to discuss items relating to OSA and how it might impact our lives. Feel free to discuss newsworthy events, experiences, hints and/or tips, using CPAP or BiPAP machines, etc.

Thanks, Will, I will order him a copy tonight...his father has OSA BAD!!!! and his grandfather as well (mom's dad) and he has it as well as A-fib and is young and in The army, but they are going to medical him out--already had to cardiovert him once and other stuff too. His mom's a nurse(I'm a retired registered nurse practitioner) but I don't think he realizes just how serious it is. I am extremely COMPLIANT with medications etc. and BTW I have gone on a LOW SODIUM DIET since we last chatted and it was a struggle at first but I have re-learned how to cook and eat, and even have come up with SODIUM FREE PORK SAUSAGE and sodium free bacon....home made of course...and can have just about anything I want except processed meats and cheeses. Just use spices instead of "mixed" spices and shop for sodium free things I no longer have to take "water pills" and my blood pressure is normal without medication, and BS is great! and feel much MUCH BETTER. I had lost about 38 pounds but ruptured an Achilles tendon in rt leg Jan 13, and only recently got out of cast and recovering from surgery (had a new one put in) so gained back 15 pounds of it but am going to go back on the lower calorie diet and try to lose it back here pretty quickly. Getting old sucks! First one thing breaks then the next! LOL
Hi there Ox Driver. Since we last chatted, I finished a book about sleep apnea. It's aimed at your grandson and those that are in denial about untreated sleep apnea. It is titled Sleep or Die. Overcome apnea before it overcomes you. Three approaches You can gift it to him from Amazon. I detail thirty afflictions untreated apnea spawns, including afib, and how apnea drives you there.
Also, I went to a conference this summer called SLEEP 2012. Catchy title. Anyway I sat in on a medical paper presentation on why sleep apnea leads to diabetes. If there is interest, I will do a post just on that subject.

Comment by PaulaO on December 17, 2012 at 6:13pm If it is a Resmed with the word "Escape" in the name, or a Respironics with the word "Plus" in the name, it records nothing but compliance data. Not sure with other manufacturers. There's an opensource software called "SleepyHead" that would allow you to view the data yourself, monitoring your own health and treatment.
There's a slowly growing outcry from CPAP users to get more control over their treatment. None of us with diabetes would ever consider using a glucose meter but having to wait to see the doc to know how our diet or medication is working. Yet, that's what CPAP users do.
I'm on my 3rd machine now, wore out the first two and this one is feather light and quiet as well, and has the computer card in it...not sure WHAT the card records other than the number of hours the machine is on, but I use it faithfully, clean out my filters and all that and insulate my tube in the winter time (I sleep in a cold room)---feel horrible without my machine, so am 100% compliant with all the things I need to do and I feel much better.
Can't get my grandson to use his, and he has A-fib and I am afraid he will have a heart attack or a stroke eventually because he doesn't like his machine/....but you can only lead a horse to water. you can NOT make it drink.

Is this group DEAD?
Comment by Rik Wade on June 14, 2012 at 7:30pm I have something that you all might like. I am the HME Coordinator for a large Neuro Science Group. I also have Diabetes. I have linked up with a good friend from Respironics. He has given me 10 masks. I will send a new mask for the first 10 people who donate at lease $25.00 to my fund raising for TOur De Cure in Northeast Ohio. The event is taking place on 6/30/12 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. My (3) daughters and I are riding. I am riding with Team Red. Here is the link to my page. When you donate send me a message here and I will ship the mask to you asap.
Well, I have gotten to the point now that I am no longer having fun sleeping on the ground, so have a bed in the back seat of my big diesel truck...and plug my Bi-pap directly into the battery and just park close to where I am camping...no longer hike back where you can't drive. LOL (getting old changes things) and in the event of major power outages we have a generator, lots of gas and diesel so can keep a battery charged if we are iced in, so guess I won't spend $600 for a more portable set up. LOL Glad that people ARE making things available for folks though that will make power outages and disaster stuff less harsh.
I live in a very hot earth quake zone--in fact a 4.7 a few months back knocked my cabinets off the wall in the middle of the night, and in "tornado alley" so I try to be "prepared" with emergency supplies and have them located in various places around the farm so hopefully if I get an earth quake or a tornado it won't get ALL of my supplies...food, water, fuel, extra medication, etc. but you never know...you just prepare the best you can and hope the rest works itself out.
I got the basic battery, Lead-acid with handle on top. It's all what you need. If you need 3 days then you need a bigger system, If you need 3 days and low weight its an different battery material type. But, just to try it I got the basic with no solar. There is a local woman who makes CPAP battery packs and they weigh 6 pounds and are half the size of my small s9 CPAP. But they cost $600.
