Hi all, I know this has some overlap with other discussions on this group.

I've been trying for some time to get manufacturers to think about data standards for diabetes data. I wrote a paper (PDF) about this almost two years ago. Please read it because you'll get some idea of how I'm thinking.

I also started a Diabetes Data wiki where I had hoped people might help with this work. Now I have a suggestion for how you can help in this work.

Last night I added a page about the Cozmo 1800 insulin pump. It gives instructions about how to export data from the Cozmo software and a little information about the data form. It also contains a pointer to an example XML file.

In the next few days I plan to add pages for OneTouch software, Wavesense software and Dexcom software. These are devices and software that I have access to.

Would anyone like to volunteer for other devices? Specifically Insulin Pumps (Animas and Minimed), CGMS (Minimed and Freestyle Navigator) and glucose meters (pick a brand).

For each device give the model number you're using, the software and directions on how to either export the data, or where the data is stored and how to get to it, and an example of the data file. I will load this information on the Wiki and give full attribution to you. If you feel uncomfortable about putting your data online give it to me and I'll tweak the values to make it less problematic.

My plan is to propose a data format standard for the following types of information.
  1. Blood glucose measurement
  2. Insulin doses (basal and bolus)
  3. Ketone measurement

I'll put this on the wiki and look for comments and feedback. If you can think of other things worth tracking let me know. I appreciate all feedback.

I guess my issue with this is the proprietary software for the "Health Vault". Its nice that there are web based options so you can grab your data from the cloud, but I'm a bit paranoid and would like to see PC/Mac based software I install on my machine. My data, not theirs.
I don't really have a problem with the health vaults / EHRs, as long as I can get the data when I want it and provided there are APIs so that app developers can present that data to me in novel ways.
I am more interested in talking about standards with ADA. Health vault could very well drive the standards. I sure appreciate your feelings.
I need to separate out my thinking on this.

1:) We need standards for the data coming out.
2:) The software and methods used to collect, store and report that data, is a different issue.
Agreed. I would add:

0:) We need to help the device mfgrs to hear their customer base (us) clamoring for standards so they do step 1:)

In an ideal world....

A) Every device would support
  1. Mini-USB connection, or
  2. Bluetooth connection

B) They'd all share a common data format that's appropriate for the device type. Or their software would export readings in a common data format.

C) And they'd all have a common data retrieval software interface, so that any developer could use the same set of calls to retrieve data from any device.

I think B is the easiest to accomplish. Some devices have a mini-USB connector but generally not a standard one. Getting a common programming interface to retrieve data would require winning over the FDA and the device makers, so it's not likely to happen any time soon.

Having customer clamor for data availability would help, so I think Databetics.org needs to collect signatures and contacts. I have the domain setup, and hope to persuade my wife to do some website creation on the site next week.
a) Yes - both would be nice.
b) Yes
c) Sounds smart

Bernard: King of Databetics.
This are pretty exact requirement, which doesn't cover most of devices. Specification of hardware sollution shouldn't be our concern, just protocol, that each device uses...

B and C sound good. Manufacturers will probably just add our protocol to their own. And of course our commands. So commands will have to be quite specific.
