Comment by midwatchcowboy on March 5, 2013 at 5:30pm Oh, and I'm a Senior Reactor Operator and have had my license suspended until I can prove my diabetes is under control. I have to get an A1C result that is < 8.5 - which might take a few months.
Comment by midwatchcowboy on March 5, 2013 at 5:26pm I felt like crap for 3 weeks after getting over the flu. I was run down, kept getting up to drink and pee. I dropped like 15 lbs and someone said, are you OK. Finally googled unexpected weight loss and found it's usually HIV, cancer or diabetes.
Went to the doctor after working 6pm to 6am shift. He asked like three questions and checked my BG with a meter - 503! Then he orders a bunch of tests to rule out pancreatic cancer. Get the full blood workup and I get sent home with Metformin.
He calls back to say you need to be at the office at 0900, no appointment. I think I've got Steve Jobs disease (pancreatic cancer). He says, "bingo, you're T1D." My A1C is 16 and C-peptide is like nothing. So, I start on MDI. Now, I have to figure out the diet with only very simple dosing until I can get with the dietician.
I think I've been pretty good for an amateur.

Comment by dandmanz on December 3, 2012 at 1:29am I was diagnosed about 6 weeks or so again after being admitted to hospital with ketonitis. had blurred vision to start with for a couple of months beforehand, then came thirst and even more thirst coupled with hunger and aching tired heavy muscles. i didn't know i had diabetes at all really. i started losing weight like crazy in the weeks leading up to being diagnosed a type 1 diabetic, even though i was eating heaps more food and sugary food at that, not knowing the damage i was doing. so i went to a local doctor recommended by a friend who sent me for blood tests, less than 24 hrs after that i was told to go straight to hospital where i was put on fluids for days and told i had type 1 diabetes and hyperthyroidism. what a shock to the system!

Comment by Krista on September 27, 2012 at 4:15pm I found out 2 days before my 23rd birthday (6 months ago). I was in the middle of student teaching and working. I thought the exhaustion I was feeling was because I was spreading myself too thin. Then it was around my bday so I had a lot of pasta meals and sugary drinks. Then I thought I was super sick, nauscious etc. I was beyond thirsty, would sit with water in my mouth. Nothing would help and the fact that I kept having to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes, I was so confused. So I happened to mention to my dr how thirsty I was and if htere was a drink to quench my thirst. Needless to say he decided to do an extra test on my. He called me that night to go to the hospital immediately. My first thought was NO NEEDLES. I use to hyperventilate whenever I would see a needle. THat night in the hospital was the worst night sleep I have had so far. Not to mention how scared, confused I was feeling. I met with my endo and the rest of my team the next day. The official diagnosis of type 1 was given to me on my birthday. What a birthday present. It has been a trying 6 months, but I am doing better everyday!
Comment by Clare on August 21, 2012 at 10:31am I found out in May 1975 because my family did camping trips in the spring. We would drive from our house 1 1/2 hours to Cape Cod. On the drive to the Cape I asked my father to stop the car 3 times so I could go to the bathroom. I made him get a campsite next to the bathroom and on the way back home we stopped 4 times. It was then my parents realized something was not right and took me that afternoon to see the pediatrician. 3 hours later I was in Boston Floating Hospital with a blood sugar of 324 and "mild ketosis". I was so thirsty that is the thing that I remember the most. I had lost about 10 pounds and at 5'6" I was 97 pounds which was stick thin. The endocrinologist gave my mom a load of crap about that, saying "didn't you notice her weight loss?" My mom said no it was winter she was wearing sweaters. To this day, my mom still remembers that question and how guilty and bad it made her feel. It's amazing the small comments over a lifetime and what a difference they can make...
Comment by ciara murphy on August 21, 2012 at 10:23am It all started 2 years ago.A couple of weeks before Christmas my mam had started to notice changes in me.I was constanly drinking bottles and bottles of water and any drinks i saw i was just drinking. My mouth was drying up alot and i was urinating alot more frequently than normal.I was also very tired and when ever i had the chance to sleep i would.I was also a chubby child but all of a sudden in the matter of a month i was loosing an awful amount of weight. My mam knew something wasnt right so she went to our local chemist and asked them for a blood sugar monitor. When we checked my blood sugar it was something like 29.0 .We didnt know what this ment so we brought the machine to our local GP.As soon as our doctor saw the result he imediatly sent us straight into hospital for blood test and he said the result was well over average. After all the running around that went on in hospital i was later diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The doctor told my mam i was very lucky she recognised the signs as i could have went into a coma or even worse i could have died if my mam hadnt notice the signs. Now 2 years on im 14 years of age back to a healthy life on insulin twice a day for the rest of my life but i am not going to let diabetes bring me down and im going to continue living my life as a teenager.I hope you enjoyed reading my story.Thank you!
Comment by NoSugarAdded on May 29, 2012 at 6:44am This was about 6 months ago the day before Thanksgiving day. For weeks in had felt extremely thirsty and was using the bathroom way more than I usually would. I thought maybe I was just lacking water.. I was also very fatigued I had no motivation to get out of bed or off the couch I just wanted to sleep, this did not trigger anything either. it was one day in my chemistry class that I was relaxing that I could not see anything my teacher was writing on the board when I new I could the week before. in was so irritated about this and it kind of made me worry. along with all of the symptoms i had i lost about 10lbs . even now I had not gone to the Dr it was when I visited my OBGYN when she kept telling me I had sugar in a urine test she had taken. they sent me fig blood work and what did we know , diabetes.
