Hypothyroidism... The silent illness

Much like Diabetes, Hypothyroidism can be a silent illness. The symptoms for both can be very similar, and often, easy to shrug off as some other circumstance. Maybe we're just getting lazier about our routines, maybe we're not drinking enough water, or we need to use more moisturizer, etc. If you feel you may have a thyroid imbalance, please do not hesitate to contact your GP or Endo. If you have a story of when you were diagnosed, feel free to share.

Did you know that January is Thyroid Awareness Month?

Past Awareness Campaigns, and 10 Facts Your Doctor Doesn't to Tell You.

Thyroid Disease...
  • Affects at least 30 million Americans -- some experts say 59 million!
  • Is easily -- and frequently -- misdiagnosed as depression
  • Is at least 7 times more likely to affect women
  • Can be the actual cause of weight gain/difficulty losing weight, fatigue, depression, hair loss, and high cholesterol in some people
  • Is most often due to autoimmune disease
  • In women, can cause infertility, low sex drive, miscarriage, irregular menstrual periods, breastfeeding problems, and difficult menopause
  • Is NOT typically tested for as part of regular blood work in an annual physical
  • Is often overlooked, misdiagnosed, or insufficiently/incorrectly treated by physicians

Cam,

I also find it challenging to time thyroid meds from food. Annoying they need to be taken on an empty stomach. I wake up earlier in order to wait an hour before eating. A pain!

Yep, thyroid problems tend to be genetic. More common in women. If a person has one autoimmune disease, there's a good chance he/she has another. My hypothyroidism is from Hashimoto's.

I've found with T1 & hypothyroidism when my thyroid dose is increased my insulin needs correspondingly increase. Others have experienced the same.

I take Nature Throid, a dessicated med.

Hi Carm,
I started off with hyper thyroid, had a iodine drink when I was 14 or 15 and then became hypo thyroid. I take my synthroid when i get up and eat right after, I've never waited to take before or after food, have always just taken it when ever. I'm not sure what medication you have been put on. One thing to note is not to take the meds with any type of vitamin supplements especially calcium/vitamin D. It affects the absorbtion.

@Carm, Good question.
Type 1 or 2? (I don't know if that matters or not)

I am hoping this group is actually still active.... So here goes.

I have been recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. After researching and understanding, I am certain that I have had it for a long time but just not diagnosed; tests were not run looking for it. My problem at present is the times when the medication must be taken. 4 hours after eating and 1 hour before eating. Okay.. that seems to fall in the very early morning when I am asleep. I have been waking in the middle of the night for most of my life and so at first I could just take it on my way back from the bathroom, not interrupting my normal sleep. However, now that I have been taking the medication for two months, I am sleeping better and so am waking up often and having to take the little pill.

Waiting an hour after I wake to eat is really not an option and I'm having to find a way to make that work out. Anyone else have a similar problem.

Are there any other things I should be looking out for or be aware of in regard to my diabetes and this new addition to my health. and... is this genetic? my mother took a thyroid med; I'm not certain if she was hypo or hyper. My oldest son is hypo and so is one of my granddaughters. So, I'm wondering???

I was born with hypothyrodism. (Congenital hypothyroidsim) so i have alrady taken 175mg every day of my life. Now I have always been somewhat overweight and I can't lose weight if my life depended on it.

I drink a lot of fluids also & have had labs show low sodium. Please don't worry. If it's white sea salt, it doesn't have other minerals for balance. http://realsalt.com/. OMG, I'm worn out from trying to figure it out. Feel like my head is going to explode. I'm all for crawling under a bush & licking my wounds.

Comment by Judith on February 17, 2012 at 11:08pm

Thanks, Gerri. We use sea salt now and I drink a lot of fluids (water and herbal teas). But, doesn't one just get tired of figuring out all these interactions?! Sometimes it just makes me want to crawl under a bush like my sick kitties....xx00

Could be nothing & probably is. Never heard low sodium being linked to thyroid, but is linked to adrenals. High potassium can be a sign of kidney problems, though my doc told me that it's usually because labs wait too long to run tests & that throws some values off. Eat more salt. Good salt that's not white.

Comment by Judith on February 17, 2012 at 10:45pm

PS: Dearhearts--just had to have a pre-op blood-draw repeated 'cause I'm running LOW in the sodium category. Thyroid, hydration, kidneys? All possibilities. NEW one to me. New worry. Though a little piece of me says if it means postponing this barbaric surgery maybe that would be okay. Sorry to make an aside.......xx000

Stressed adrenals is common & doctors rarely ever look at this. Tell your doc that you can't cope, you get sent to a shrink or given anti-anxiety med. You have a great PCP.
